Hybrid cloud vs ransomware: why resilience starts with the right data strategy - Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - 02:50

Ransomware has become a defining cybersecurity threat, increasing in scale, sophistication, and cost. In the UK alone, recent months have seen a wave of high-profile incidents disrupting everything from retail and logistics to public services – with consequences that reach far beyond the IT department.

Take the case of Marks & Spencer. A major breach in April 2025 exposed customer data, triggered widespread operational disruption, and is already slated to have cost the company £300 million – apart from the billion pounds or more the incident has wiped from the retailer’s stock market value.

At Co-op, a ransomware-linked outage halted critical systems. The Legal Aid Agency suffered a breach of sensitive legal and financial records. Meanwhile, even Harrods and logistics firm Peter Green Chilled weren’t spared. These are not isolated events - they’re signals of a broader shift.

The UK retail industry alone lost over £2.2 billion to shoplifting last year, according to the British Retail Consortium. And while theft may be an age-old problem, ransomware has become its digital cousin - often just as costly, but far harder to trace and recover from.

As businesses count the cost of downtime, data loss, and reputational fallout, one thing is clear: ransomware isn’t just a cybersecurity issue. It’s a business issue. In a digital world, ransomware has become nothing more than the cost of doing business online, just as shoplifting is to its bricks-and-mortar equivalent.

Realistically, the best cybersecurity efforts are more deterrent than panacea these days. And besides ensuring they do the necessary to secure the perimeter, the most logical thing for organizations to focus on is how to recover from the inevitable cyberattack - this, however, is a stumbling block for many businesses.

It now takes organizations an average of five weeks to fully recover from a cyberattack. In sectors where every hour offline can cost hundreds of thousands of pounds, that rate of loss is simply no longer sustainable. Yet, many still over-index on prevention, when it’s recovery speed, not perimeter defense, that ultimately defines the business impact of an attack. The question is no longer if you’ll be targeted, but how fast you can bounce back.

The reality of recovery: why time is the new risk factor

The longer data recovery takes, the more damage is done, and yet 72% of organizations take more than a week to restore operations after an attack. Manufacturing and healthcare average over six weeks.

These delays are not merely inconvenient. According to ITIC’s 2024 Hourly Cost of Downtime Report, more than 90% of mid-size and large enterprises say one hour of downtime now costs more than £220,000. Recovery timelines that stretch into days or weeks can translate into millions in lost revenue, disrupted services, and long-term damage to brand trust and shareholder confidence.

What hybrid cloud really means and why it matters

Hybrid cloud storage combines the performance of on-premises systems with the scalability and durability of the cloud. For instance, in hybrid cloud models, data can be cached locally for fast access, and every change can be stored in immutable cloud object storage in real time.

This architecture supports AI-readiness, multi-site collaboration, and petabyte-scale growth – but critically, it also bakes in ransomware resilience. Where traditional file servers and backups can be encrypted or deleted, hybrid cloud platforms maintain a centralized, tamper-proof record of every file version, stored securely and out of reach from attackers.

It’s why hybrid cloud storage is no longer a fringe technology – it’s becoming the standard for modern IT resilience.

Hybrid cloud’s secret weapon: file versioning and immutability

Ransomware attacks typically encrypt critical data and demand payment. More aggressive attackers now double down, leaking or selling sensitive data to increase leverage. But if your organization can roll back files to their clean state before the attack – in minutes – the threat loses its sting.

This ‘point-in-time’ recovery isn’t theoretical. A growing number of organizations are entrusting their file data to platforms that capture continuous, immutable snapshots, allowing them to restore affected files instantly. Some enterprises are now recovering in minutes, not weeks.

Legacy backup processes, with their reliance on daily or weekly windows, can’t keep pace with modern threats. That’s why many organizations are moving to continuous file versioning, with snapshot intervals as short as five minutes – enabling near-instant recovery, eliminating ransom payments, and removing the need for days of manual restoration.

IT teams no longer need to rebuild entire environments; they simply select a clean point in time and restore affected files with just a few clicks.

Recovery starts with readiness – and the right tools

Recovery speed matters, but containment is just as important. Modern hybrid cloud platforms often include built-in ransomware detection, monitoring for abnormal file activity, quarantining threats, and enabling surgical recovery.

It’s not surprising, then, that hybrid cloud users are 29% more likely to recover within a week than their non-hybrid peers. More importantly, they can isolate and restore only the affected regions or datasets – avoiding full outages and business-wide shutdowns.

But the technology alone isn’t enough. IT teams must be equipped with the right tools, processes, and authority to act fast when it matters. Hoping they’ll manage with legacy backups and wishful thinking is no longer tenable, and risks turning a contained incident into a company-wide crisis.

As one IT leader recently shared, having successfully restored operations after an attack: “The recovery was so fast, the conversation shifted entirely. It was no longer about recovering data – it was about cleaning affected endpoints and containing disruption.” In other words, recovery becomes a coordination exercise, not a catastrophe.

Cyber resilience gaps and how hybrid cloud bridges them

Despite ongoing modernization efforts, many organizations still face critical gaps in their ransomware response:

  • Data security and privacy concerns are significant barriers to adopting new technologies
  • There’s a stark lack of in-house skills to manage and secure transitions, and
  • Organizations themselves admit their data isn’t backed up, immutable, or easily recoverable

That’s a dangerous trio, and one that increases the risk of prolonged, expensive downtime.

Hybrid cloud platforms help close these gaps. They automate protection, centralize file versioning, and simplify recovery, even for lean IT teams. With immutable cloud snapshots and integrated monitoring, organizations can move from reactive crisis management to confident, controlled recovery.

Resilience is the real differentiator

Ransomware is now a fact of life – as inevitable as death and taxes, as the saying goes. And it’s becoming more targeted, more professional, and more destructive. The UK has already seen the consequences this year.

Hybrid cloud storage offers a practical and proven way to reduce both the risk and the impact of an attack. It turns recovery into a competitive differentiator – the difference between days of downtime and business as usual.

And let’s be honest: whether you’re protecting customer data or the availability of Percy Pigs, you can’t afford to get recovery wrong.

What is the best PCIe NVMe SSD for my needs? - Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - 04:02

PCIe NVMe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express Non-Volatile Memory Express) SSDs represent a major advancement in data storage because of the speed and efficiency they deliver along with a direct connection to the CPU.

A quick comparison with older technologies like SATA SSDs or traditional HDDs, shows that improved read/write speeds allow tasks like booting an OS, launching applications, file transfers and large data processing to take place much faster. But there is another inherent advantage because NVMe is designed for flash memory and allows parallel I/O operations which drastically reduces latency, ensuring smoother performance for high-end applications or any task that requires real-time data access.

There are now multiple generations of PCIe NVMe SSDs available which can make choosing the most suitable solution challenging. The best approach is to look at the needs of the organization and align these with the different options. In this article, we will explore the differences between Gen 3, Gen 4 and the new Gen 5 SSD’s, to determine what can be expected from each one, and what an upgrade will deliver in terms of benefits.

Unpacking the different PCIe generations

PCIe is the interface standard that allows SSDs to connect to the motherboard. With every new generation of PCIe there is an improvement in bandwidth and speed. NVMe is a communication interface and driver that has been designed specifically for high-speed data transfer between the computer's solid-state drive (SSD) and its processor, leveraging the PCIe interface.

Looking at Gen 3, Gen 4 and Gen 5 SSD’s in terms of maximum bandwidth, maximum read speed and the applications for which they are most suitable, we can see clearly how they stack up:

PCIe Gen 3: This offers a maximum bandwidth of 16GB/s across 16 lanes, with up to 3,500MB/s sequential read speeds on NVMe SSDs. This generation is ideal for general computing needs.

PCIe Gen 4: This generation doubled the bandwidth of Gen 3 to 32GB/s across 16 lanes, enabling SSDs to reach sequential read speeds of over 7,000MB/s. For users who need support for PC and console gaming, or for content creation.

PCIe Gen 5: Once again this doubles the bandwidth, offering up to 64GB/s across 16 lanes. Gen 5 SSDs have set outstanding new standards in when it comes to achieving sequential read speeds exceeding 14,000MB/s. The newest generation is designed for high-performance workloads and PC gaming.

It’s important to note that theoretical speeds are calculated without external factors such as NAND speed, controller limitations and optimization for real world efficiency and cooling.

Each generational leap offers not just marginal improvements, but foundational shifts in data transfer rates, capacity, and interactions with modern CPUs and software. On top of this is continually improved efficiency, which further benefits high-performance workloads, or intensive compute activity such as gaming.

The PCIe NVMe adoption landscape

Most computers are still using Gen 3 or even SATA SSDs, which are common in older systems and budget builds. Adopting Gen 4 over Gen 3 provides the kind of performance boost that matters amongst users whose needs are specific and demanding, such as content creators, and professionals working with large amounts of data.

Gen 5 is much newer to the market and is currently more expensive but is sought after by users with data-intensive tasks. Gen 5 SSDs are suitable for supporting 8K video editing, top-end gaming and large-scale simulations, but with the rapid growth of AI, sales are being further boosted. Because they more than double the read and write speeds of Gen 4, they are being widely used for AI model training.

One of the advantages of PCIe Gen 5 is that it provides futureproofing. Users are investing in a technology that will remain relevant for many years, as software and hardware continue to demand higher performance. Even if there are some applications and hardware that are unable to utilize Gen 5 just yet, it is backwards compatible.

Is PCIe Gen 5 needed for gaming on PlayStation 5 or Xbox series X?

We are often asked this question, and it applies to other gaming systems too. PCIe Gen 5 SSDs are the best on the market, but that doesn’t mean that all users need them right now. The Sony PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are designed to support Gen 4 SSDs with a heatsink. A Gen 4 NVMe SSD with heatsink, will be more than capable of providing the speed required to optimize load times and gameplay performance on these games consoles.

For most gamers and everyday users, Gen 4 SSDs strike an ideal mix of speed and cost-effectiveness. Unless a user is tackling high-end tasks that require top-tier performance, Gen 4 drives are more than capable of handling the demands.

Generational standard improvements

Any upgrade needs careful consideration, and practical matters such as motherboard compatibility and thermal management needs are important. PCIe NVMe SSDs have evolved rapidly, and each new generation has raised the bar for speed and efficiency, but the first question should be, what do I need this for?

PCIe Gen 3 is a reliable choice for everyday computing, and Gen 4 steps up with noticeably faster performance; while at the top of the spectrum, PCIe Gen 5 delivers cutting-edge speeds for power users. Cost versus performance gain and long-term efficiency are key factors to add into the decision mix when upgrading or investing in this storage technology.

How SLMs and knowledge graphs supercharge AI - Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - 04:37

Hardly a week goes by without a breakthrough in LLMs (large language models). They're cheaper to train and getting smarter, so why bother with their little sibling SLMs (small language models)?

For any developer team serious about delivering practical AI, it all comes down to focus and fit. LLMs are great for general, non-domain-specific tasks, but when AI needs to be truly useful in a business context, an SLM, or even a federation of SLMs supporting an LLM, is often the smarter choice.

Why? Because, as top reasoning engines show, using a general-purpose AI for a focused or numeric task is often overkill, and introduces risk. For example, DeepSeek R1 uses a “mixture of experts” setup with 671 billion parameters, but only up to 37 billion activate per query.

Because it knows it needs to operate with only a subset of those billions of parameters active at any given time, and it’s much more efficient to instead break problems down and use selective use of smaller components when it spots, say, a user question that needs some mathematical sub-routines, and not all of its encoded “brain power.”

It’s easy to see how much more useful the results become when you stop assuming one LLM can do it all. A smarter approach is to deploy different SLMs to analyze specific areas of your business, such as finance, operations, logistics, and then feed their focused outputs into a more general model that synthesizes the findings into a single, coherent response.

When you think about it, this model of coordination is deeply human. Our brains don’t fire up every region at once; we activate specific areas for language, memory, motor function, and more. It’s a modular, connected form of reasoning that mirrors how we solve problems in the real world. A physicist might stumble outside their domain, while a generalist can offer broader but less precise insights. Likewise, AI systems that recognize boundaries of expertise and delegate tasks accordingly can tackle far more complex problems than even the smartest standalone LLM.

SLMs v LLMs

To test the case for SLMs, just try asking ChatGPT, or any general-purpose LLM, about your AWS infrastructure. Since LLMs are notoriously imprecise with numbers, even a basic question like “how many servers do we have?” will likely produce a guess or hallucination, not a reliable answer.

A better approach would chain together an SLM trained to generate accurate database queries, retrieve the exact data, and then pass that to an LLM to explain the result in natural language. For predictive tasks, classical statistical models often still outperform neural networks — and in those cases, an SLM could be used to optimize the model’s parameters, with an LLM summarizing and contextualizing the results.

SLMs aren’t just cheaper — they’re often more capable in niche domains. Take Microsoft’s Phi-2, a small model trained on high-quality math and coding data. Because of its focused, domain-specific training, it famously outperformed much larger models in its area of expertise.

Until (or unless) we reach true AGI, no single model will be great at everything. But an SLM trained for a specific task often outperforms a generalist. Give it the right context, and it delivers peak performance — simple as that.

Granularity matters. You don’t need an AI that knows who won the World Cup in 1930; you need one that understands how your company mixes paint, builds networks, or schedules deliveries. Domain focus is what makes AI useful in the real world.

And for mid-sized operations, SLMs are much more cost-effective. They require fewer GPUs, consume less power, and offer better ROI. That also makes them more accessible to smaller teams, who can afford to train and run models tailored to their needs.

Best to be flexible

So, is the case closed? Just pick an SLM and enjoy guaranteed ROI from enterprise AI? Not quite.

The real challenge is getting your supply chain, or any domain-specific data, into the model in a usable, reliable way. Both LLMs and SLMs rely on transformer architectures that are typically trained in large batches. They’re not naturally suited to continuous updates.

To keep an SLM relevant and accurate, you still need to feed it fresh, contextual data. That’s where graph technology comes in. A well-structured knowledge graph can act as a live tutor, constantly grounding the model in updated, trustworthy information.

This combination, SLM plus knowledge graph, is proving particularly powerful in high-stakes domains. It delivers faster, more precise, and more cost-efficient outputs than a standalone LLM.

Add to this the growing adoption of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), especially in graph-enabled setups (GraphRAG), and you have a game-changer. By bridging structured and unstructured data and injecting just-in-time context, this architecture makes AI genuinely enterprise-ready.

GraphRAG also boosts reasoning by continuously retrieving relevant, real-world information, instead of relying on static or outdated data. The result? Sharper, more contextual responses that elevate tasks like query-focused summarization (QFS) and enable SLMs to operate with greater precision and adaptability.

In short, if we want AI systems that truly address real business challenges, rather than echo back what they think we want to hear, the future isn’t about building ever-bigger LLMs. For many enterprise scenarios, a hybrid SLM/GraphRAG model may be the real path forward for GenAI.

Next-generation Xbox console leaks suggest the graphics arms race isn't going anywhere - Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - 05:10
  • A new round of leaks regarding the next Xbox console have hit the internet
  • The new console will reportedly outpace PS5 Pro and target native 4K 120fps performance
  • It could arrive as soon as late 2026 to early 2027

Microsoft may be going all-in on its next-generation Xbox console, and it might be launching sooner than you think.

As reported by Notebookcheck, a new round of leaks from Moore's Law Is Dead suggest that the next Xbox console could greatly outpace the PS5 Pro in terms of performance and visual fidelity.

The new system, codenamed Magnus, will allegedly have AMD's RDNA 5 GPU and Zen 6 CPU. According to Moore's Law, graphical capabilities here would roughly be the equivalent of an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 card. The system will reportedly capable of targeting native 120fps performance at 4K resolution. We might also expect improved ray tracing capabilities.

As for launch window, Moore's Law suggests a late 2026 - 2027 release time. That's a bit earlier than I'd have expected, given the seven-to-eight-year gap found with more recent console generations. It may also suggest that once again, you probably shouldn't expect a massive PS1 to PS2-esque technological leap.

It's also been reported that the next Xbox console will rely on AMD's FSR upscaling tech. So unlike PS5 Pro's PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), Microsoft potentially isn't looking at developing its own AI upscaling solution.

Backwards compatibility also seems likely, meaning current-generation Xbox players should be able to carry over their game libraries to the new console without issues. Though part of this hinges on whether or not the next Xbox will feature a disc drive, or if Microsoft is opting to go fully discless as we've recently seen evidence of with the Xbox Series X Digital Edition.

Developers are finding it hard to trust AI - and not just because it could steal their jobs - Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - 05:11
  • Developers are less likely to trust AI-generated output than they were last year, report claims
  • Only 2.5% of experienced developers highly trust AI output
  • AI is great at helping new developers learn to code

As developers become more accustomed to AI tools in their workflows, it's becoming increasingly clear that they don't always trust its output, new research has claimed.

The latest developer survey from Stack Overflow has revealed although AI adoption is up to 84% from 76% in 2024, ther has also been a huge jump in the number of developers who don't trust AI-generated results, up from 31% in 2024 to 46% in 2025.

On the flip side, only 3.1% highly trust AI results – a sentiment that's more common among beginners (6.1%) than it is among experienced devs (2.5%).

Developers aren't sure about AI, still

Currently, as many as 78.5% of developers use AI on an infrequent basis, such as monthly, and this is consistent across all experience levels according to the study.

Despite the lack of trust, it's clear that developers see artificial intelligence as a useful starting point, with as many as three in five viewing AI tools favorably compared with just one in five who see it unfavorably (and a further one in five who are indifferent).

But that's all it is at the moment – a starting point. Three-quarters admitted that they'd still ask a human when they don't trust AI answers, with 58% preferring to ask humans when they don't fully understand something and a similar number seeking human help for ethical and security concerns.

"AI is a powerful tool, but it has significant risks of misinformation or can lack complexity or relevance," Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar explained.

While its use cases in the development cycle may be more limited, artificial intelligence is proving to be useful in other areas – 44% use it to learn to code (up from 37% last year), and 36% use it for work or advancement.

"By providing a trusted human intelligence layer in the age of AI, we believe the tech enthusiasts of today can play a larger role in adding value to build the AI technologies and products of tomorrow," Chandrasekar added.

Massive Russian earthquake and tsunami having no effect on subsea cables so far - Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - 05:50
  • Magnitude 8.8 earthquake strikes off Russia's east coast
  • The epicenter is near two local subsea cables, which remain operational
  • The Pacific is filled with other cables, but they could be safe from disruptions

After the sixth-largest quake in recorded history struck off the eastern coast of Russia, experts have been quick to reassure that critical subsea cables used for internet and data transfer remain secure.

Rated to magnitude 8.8, tsunami warnings are now being shared across the whole North Pacific region, including Japan and America's West Coast, with waves already arriving in Hawaii, and Japanese low-lying coastal towns being urged to evacuate.

However, so far there have been no effects on critical infrastructure, with subsea cables remaining in tact.

Russian earthquake didn't prompt internet outages

So far, no outages have been reported by communication facilities, cloud computing services or chipmaking plants, with the likes of AWS, Azure and Google Cloud still operating normally.

Russia’s Rostelecom has not reported any disruptions to its subsea cable connecting Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky with Anadyr, despite its location near to the quake site.

The 10-point Polar Express subsea cable that's currently under construction, also connecting Russian locations and also located near the earthquake's epicenter, doesn't look to have been disrupted, though the quake could cause delays to the project.

Although no other cables transit near the epicenter, the Pacific is filled with major subsea cable networks, including Google's Topaz and Jupiter, which is part-owned by AWS and Meta.

Still, subsea cables are generally buries in trenches for the first few kilometres offshore. Once they're exposed on the ocean floor, they're deep enough not to be majorly affected by tsunami water columns. The biggest risk is earthquake-triggered submarine landslides which threaten to break cables, as seen when nine Asia-Pacific cables snapped in the 2006 magnitude 7.0 Taiwan earthquake.

Hyperscalers also make use of multiple Availability Zones, meaning that even if Russia's earthquake were to affect one area, traffic could be rerouted within hours.

Orange warns of possible mobile disruption following suspected cyberattack - Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - 06:15
  • Orange warns customers of an ongoing cyberattack
  • The attack forced it to isolate parts of its network
  • This isolation could cause disruptions, it warned

Orange Group, one of the world’s leading telecom operators, has warned about a cyberattack that disrupted some of its services.

In a statement, the French telecom giant said on July 25, it detected a cyberattack on one of its information systems. Moving in to mitigate the threat, the company was forced to “isolate” potentially affected services, causing disruption to different management services and platforms.

Both business customers, as well as “a few” consumer services, primarily located in France, could experience temporary service disruptions or be completely offline for some users, Orange said. “Our dedicated teams are actively engaged in informing and assisting the affected customers.”

Salt Typhoon

The company said it identified and is currently implementing solutions that will allow it to gradually restore the affected services. At press time, most of the services should already be back up and running.

While there was no talk of the threat actors, how they broke in, or what their motives were, Orange did say that there was no evidence suggesting any data exfiltration or tampering. However, it still lodged a formal complaint with the regulators and filed notices with relevant authorities.

“For obvious security reasons, Orange will not provide further comments,” Orange concluded.

Being critical infrastructure, telecommunications organizations are constantly at the crosshairs of different hacking groups and state-sponsored cybercriminals.

Salt Typhoon, a Chinese state-sponsored group and a part of the wider “typhoon” collective of hackers, has been targeting telecoms for some time, striking some of the world’s biggest and most popular brands.

The goal is to remain hidden inside the network, in case tensions between China and the US over Taiwan escalate into a full-blown war. In that case, the groups are tasked with disrupting services, eavesdropping on vital communications, and exfiltrating sensitive information.

Massive new Mario Kart World patch adds a must-have feature for completionists - Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - 06:23
  • Mario Kart World version 1.2.0 is here
  • It adds a new way to track progress in Free Roam
  • It also nerfs NPC opponents and the Boomerang item

The latest patch for Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive Mario Kart World is here, and it's a big one.

Update 1.2.0 is available now and there's plenty to be excited about. First and foremost, completionists will surely appreciate the new way to tell when they've hoovered up all the collectibles in free roam mode.

Now, when you have collected all of the P Switches, ? Panels, or Peach Medallions, the color of the on-screen numbers will change to denote that there are none left. This should make it a lot easier to keep track of what you need to scoop up for 100% completion.

The update also nerfs the Boomerang item, reducing its homing capabilities which should come as a relief if you've been repeatedly hit by it during races like I have. Non-playable character (NPC) opponents have also been made a little weaker outside of Battle mode, which will hopefully make races a little more manageable.

Other big changes include the ability to select a 'Mushrooms only' item rule in VS Races, or view the replays of downloaded time trial ghost data.

The update also includes a large number of fixes, addressing issues in both online and single-player modes.

You can view the full patch notes, as released by Nintendo, below:

  • In the “VS Race” of “Single Player”, added “No COM” to the COM rules.
  • In the “VS Race” of “Single Player” and “Multiplayer”, added “Mushrooms only” to the item rules.
  • You can now choose “View Replay” after downloading ghost data in “Time Trials”.
  • You can now choose whom to watch when spectating in “Knockout Tour” and “Balloon Battle” in “Online Play”, “Wireless Play”, and “LAN Play”.
  • You can now see the waiting time until the next race or battle starts in “Online Play”, “Wireless Play”, and “LAN Play”.
  • When using CameraPlay in “Multiplayer” and “Online Play”, the game will now remember the camera cursor position and size until the player closes the game.
    • If you change the number of people playing, the cursor position and size will return to their original settings.
  • On the “Free Roam” map, when you gather all of the P Switches, ? Panels, and Peach Medallions, the colors of the various numbers will now change.
  • Made COM weaker in everything other than “Battle”.
  • Made homing of Boomerang weaker.
  • Decreased the probability of getting a Triple Dash Mushroom in the low position, whenever the item rules in a race are anything other than “Frantic”.
  • Changed it so order of getting ? Block is higher than in the past, whenever the item rules in a race are anything other than “Frantic”.
  • Made it so there is a wheel spinning animation if the player presses the A button (acceleration) too early when starting a race while driving.
    • Player will not lose speed even when spinning wheels.
  • Increased the frequency of lap-type courses appearing in the selection when choosing the next course in “VS Race” and wireless races.

Fixed Issues:

  • Fixed an issue where the rate fluctuations were sometimes displayed incorrectly in wireless races.
  • Fixed an issue where the vehicle would stay floating in air when jumping off a half pipe.
  • Fixed an issue where, when a player crashes while gliding and uses Bullet Bill, they go out of the course.
  • Fixed an issue where, if a player quits a Rewind in the location where they were wall riding, the driver’s posture would not return to what it was before.
  • Fixed an issue where the item that was displayed in the item slot would turn into something else when using it.
  • Fixed an issue where in “Online Play”, the player would not dash even when getting on a Dash Panel.
  • Fixed an issue where the points in a team race in “Wireless Play” would display incorrectly.
  • Fixed an issue where sometimes controls were inoperable on the menu screen after the player was retired in “Balloon Battle” in “Wireless Play”.
  • Fixed an issue where a Peach Medallion would sometimes disappear when doing Rewind in “Free Roam”.
  • Fixed an issue where sometimes controls were inoperable when the player pointed the cursor at their own character or course and pressed A on the “Free Roam” map.
  • Fixed an issue where sometimes controls were inoperable when the player quit a mission in “Free Roam” right before entering a pipe.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would slip through some drift ice around “Sky-High Sundae”.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would get caught on the outside of a handrail on the left and right sides right after the start of “Airship Fortress”.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would get caught on the fence and not be able to move forward in “Bowser's Castle”.
  • Fixed an issue where, when the player used a Bullet Bill in “Bowser's Castle”, they would not be able to glide and fell into the abyss.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would go out of the course when using a Mega Mushroom on the last turn of “Whistlestop Summit”.
  • Fixed an issue where the player could not get out of the location where they fell from a railroad when “Smart Steering” is on in “Whistlestop Summit”.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would slip through the ground at a ramp near the goal at “Choco Mountain”.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would get caught on a block when using a Bullet Bill on the road that enters “Choco Mountain”.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would get caught on a plank of wood laid on the road when throwing a green shell on the road between “DK Spaceport” and “Whistlestop Summit”.
  • Fixed an issue where the last place would be sometimes incorrect in the wireless races of “Dino Dino Jungle”.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would get caught on the back of a leaf when using a Bullet Bill in “Acorn Heights”.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would not be able to slip through a vase that is placed on the road in “Shy Guy Bazaar”, when using a Boo.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would slip through the ceiling in “Dry Bones Burnout”.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would sometimes hit a fence when throwing a red shell on the first turn in “Moo Moo Meadows”.
  • Fixed an issue where one part of the effects that take place for the bridge transforming when heading toward “Rainbow Road” did not display.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would slip through the ground on the road between ”Starview Peak” and “Sky-High Sundae”.
  • Fixed an issue where some of the item boxes would not have appeared in “Wario Shipyard”.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would slip through the bottom of a rock near the goal of ”Wario Shipyard”.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would go out of the course when using a Mega Mushroom on a turn inside “Wario Stadium”.
  • Fixed an issue where the player gets caught on a tree in the middle of a shortcut if they have “Smart Steering” on when heading from “Starview Peak” to “Dandelion Depths” in “Ice Rally” of “Knockout Tour”.
  • Several other issues have been addressed to improve the gameplay experience.

Mario Kart World is available now for Nintendo Switch 2. It is offered either separately as a physical release or digital download, or as part of a bundle with the console.

VPN apps are topping UK app stores right now – here’s why - Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - 06:26
  • Free VPNs are among the most downloaded apps in UK app store
  • A surge in downloads follows the introduction of an age verification law
  • Users could be putting their privacy at risk with less reputable free VPNs

VPNs are now among the most downloaded apps in UK app stores following the implementation of age verification. As of July 25, 2025, the UK’s new law requires sites hosting content deemed for adults to carry out age verification checks.

Internet users in the UK must prove they’re over 18 using verification methods including facial age estimation – sharing a selfie or video – or uploading a form of ID. The new law also impacts social media platforms including Reddit, X, and Bluesky.

Age verification comes as the government looks to protect minors from harmful content, as per the Online Safety Act. Some of the best VPN apps are now topping the Apple App Store and Google Play Store as users look to bypass age checks.

(Image credit: Future)Free VPNs dominate Apple's UK App Store

At the time of writing, Proton VPN leads the top free apps on the UK’s Apple App Store. The Swiss VPN provider reported a 1,800% increase in signups in the weekend following the new law’s implementation.

NordVPN, VPN - Super Unlimited Proxy, and Free VPN by Free VPN.org also make the top five most downloaded free apps in the UK.

The rise in VPN downloads comes despite Ofcom, the UK’s internet regulator, discouraging the use of VPNs to bypass verification. It told the BBC it would be illegal for platforms to promote VPNs as a means to get around age checks.

At the time of writing, over 420,000 people have signed a petition to repeal the Online Safety Act, with many concerned about the privacy risks that age verification carries.

The importance of choosing a reputable VPN

Ofcom’s assurances that “strong age checks can be done effectively, safely, and in a way that protects [user] privacy” may not be enough to ease concerns amid recent high-profile data breaches.

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a privacy tool that encrypts your internet traffic, allowing you to browse privately. By connecting to a VPN server, you can secure your connection to the verification provider, reducing the risk of issues should they be victims of a data breach.

The trouble with some free VPNs being among those most downloaded by UK app store users is that these apps may log excessive data, identifying users and putting privacy at risk. They may also lack essential security features – such as strong encryption – that help keep user data safe.

Proton VPN Free, from privacy-first company Proton, being the most downloaded free VPN app, suggests that UK internet users are, at least, putting privacy first in their quest for access. It's among the best free VPNs, offering Swiss privacy and top security features for no cost.

UK internet users looking to browse the internet privately also have the option of paid VPN providers, some of which offer free trials. Most have money-back guarantees of at least 30 days, making it possible to try their services risk-free and request a refund if unsatisfied.

Right now, the best paid VPN is NordVPN. It has some of the fastest speeds around, rock-solid security, and a bunch of added features that make your everyday easier. Plus, TechRadar readers can exclusively claim up to $50 in Amazon gift vouchers and 4 months free when they sign up.

Spotify could soon let you hide its most annoying new button – and fans couldn't be more relieved - Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - 06:43
  • Users on Reddit have spotted a new feature on the Spotify mobile app that allows you to remove the Create button
  • While users are more than happy to see it gone, the feature is only available to a handful of users
  • Spotify has been quiet, so we've done our own little Reddit investigation to get to the bottom of it

When Spotify added the Create button to the in-app navigation bar, it was very poorly received and music fans begged to have it removed, mainly because it messes up muscle memory. Now, it appears as though Spotify is listening to those complaints.

A few weeks back, Android Authority reported that Spotify could be releasing a new toggle setting that would allow you to remove the Create button from the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. This was initially speculation, but now a number of users have shared images on Reddit showing a new toggle under the ‘Display preferences’ header in Spotify’s settings. Not everyone has access to it yet though – myself included.

While Spotify hasn’t made an official announcement, the online discourse suggests that the music streaming service could be rolling it out gradually since a handful of users already have access. However, despite the absence of the new feature in my app, the Create button has disappeared from my interface (see below). This was confusing, so I took to Reddit to see what others had to say.

In my Spotify app, the Create button has been moved back to the top right corner, but there's no sign of the new toggle feature in settings (Image credit: Future)Is this the end for one of Spotify’s most annoying features?

What do we know so far? Well, despite Spotify being silent on the matter, evidence on Reddit reveals that this feature is slowly joining the settings ecosystem for some Spotify users. The post below reveals this, which shows the new feature sitting in the ‘Content and display’ section in settings under ‘Display preferences’.

Comment from r/truespotify

But why would Spotify remove the Create button from my app without giving me access to the disable toggle? From the responses I’ve received, it suggests that a new Spotify update could be on the way.

Right now I’m using version 9.0.64, which the App Store says is the most recent. While this is the case for a lot of people here at TechRadar, most of the people on the team are still seeing the Create button in the navigation bar, which isn’t the case for me. With that said, one user with the feature shared on Reddit that they’re using version 9.0.64.608 – meaning that Spotify could be testing different versions of the app before deciding to go ahead with a roll out.

If you’re still waiting to get access to the new feature, I’ve been advised to wait another day or two before expecting its arrival, so for now, that’s what I’m rolling with. In the meantime, we've reached out to Spotify for confirmation and will update this story if we hear back.

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 episode 4 has set up Conrad’s excruciating POV in next week’s episode, and I already can’t bear it - Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - 06:54

If you were paying attention to the end of The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 episode 4, you’ll have noticed Conrad’s parting voiceover, saying “What have I done?” In case you missed it, the hit Prime Video show has set us up for a full episode from Conrad’s point of view (POV) next week, and it’s going to be a tough one to sit through. Why? Just look at the unhinged level of chaos that’s unfolded over the last few weeks.

We’re only four episodes into the show’s final season, and it isn’t wasting any time dishing out the dirt. The first two episodes kicked off with Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) not managing to graduate on time, then proposing haphazardly to Belly (Lola Tung) without a ring, but has also cheated on her in the interim… twice. Steven (Sean Kaufman) woke up from a coma after being in a car accident on exactly the same day Jeremiah chose to propose, naturally. In episode 3, we saw Conrad (Christopher Briney) find out the engagement news at his own mother’s memorial ceremony.

In short, it’s a tough time to be Conrad, and things aren’t going to get any easier. There’s a big chance we’re about to see what’s happening – or what’s about to happen – from his perspective in The Summer I Turned Pretty in season 3 episode 5, and I’m not sure the fandom is going to survive it.

Conrad’s POV is coming in The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 episode 5, and it’s going to break us

Conrad (Christopher Briney) in The Summer I Turned Pretty. (Image credit: Amazon Prime Video)

Here’s what we know from The Summer I Turned Pretty in season 3 episode 4. We’ve seen Conrad comforting Belly while she cries and then saying yes to being best man, giving his blessing through gritted teeth. He bakes for her birthday, which he’s remembered off of his own back and staying at his cousins to make her feel more comfortable. In the meantime, Jeremiah left Belly in tears to board a flight to Cabo, which is exactly the same flight Conrad canceled in order to stay by her side.

Even with your eyes closed, there’s no question about who’s coming out on top in this ill-fated love triangle. Well, everyone except for Belly can see this. It’s a rite of teenage passage to make some terrible decisions that could potentially derail your entire life, but dragging Conrad through the emotional mud as collateral damage only gets more difficult to watch as time goes on. But could his POV moment mark a turning point in the Prime Video hit?

CONRAD'S POV NEXT WEEK WE SHOULD ALL BE VERY AFRIAD #TheSummerITurnedPretty pic.twitter.com/BQQipRwGOFJuly 30, 2025

We’re either going to see the build-up to episodes 3 and 4 from Conrad’s eyes, or follow the immediate fallout from episode 4 instead. Conrad’s always had a mountain ahead of him to climb when it comes to his feelings, but dump all of this on his plate and that mountain’s just got a lot bigger. I cannot stand how badly he’s being treated by just about everyone else on the show, and that doesn’t seem likely to stop.

However, a switch in perspective could be a means to an end. We’re assuming that season 3 ends with Belly and Conrad riding off into the sunset, which means a hefty bit of emotional baggage needs to be worked through over the next seven episodes. In order for that to be convincing, the turning point has to be huge in order to make a profound enough difference to everyone involved. Seeing events from Conrad’s POV while he comes to terms with Belly and Jeremiah marrying is just the right kind of straw to break the camel’s back.

Conrad’s going to cry, I’m going to cry and I’d bet good money that you’re going to cry too. The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 episode 4 was possibly the most brutal of the bunch yet, but if it means starting down the path to getting Conrad the justice he deserves, I’m ready to rip my heart open even more by watching him struggling first-hand.

The Google Pixel 10 just leaked again, and it looks like it's getting a big charging upgrade - Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - 06:58
  • The Pixel 10 could support MagSafe-style charging
  • This comes from a freshly-leaked image of the phone
  • Google may also launch some 'Pixelsnap' accessories

We're all set for the grand unveiling of the Google Pixel 10 series on Wednesday, August 20, and the leaks are continuing. The latest unofficial batch of images posted to the web confirm an earlier rumor: MagSafe for Android is coming.

These images are from veteran tipster Evan Blass, and as well as showing the Pixel 10 from a variety of angles, we can also see a charging puck connected to the back of one of the phones – as if magnetically snapped in place.

That apparently confirms that the Pixel 10 handsets are going to support the Qi2 wireless charging standard, including support for magnets that keep a charger in place. Some previous Android phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S25, have adopted Qi2 but without the magnetic snapping part of it.

Of course Apple's own MagSafe tech has led the way here, adding that extra magnetic touch to wireless charging that means chargers can snap into place. We can expect a variety of third-party Android accessories to appear now too.

As previously rumored

pic.twitter.com/SeZIS2PMkHJuly 29, 2025

This isn't the first time we've heard this rumor, and there were whispers of it back in June. Apparently Google is readying some accessories with 'Pixelsnap' branding, which will presumably work a lot like MagSafe chargers do for the iPhone.

Whether or not this tech will make it to other Android phones remains to be seen, but it looks likely. We know that Samsung is certainly thinking about it, but we haven't seen it on any phones yet – including the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7.

While MagSafe-style charging is certainly beneficial and convenient for phone users, it does mean magnets need to be embedded into the actual handsets, which can add to the bulk and the cost of these devices.

We'll have to wait and see what Google says about this new technology when the phones are launched. We've previously seen a bunch of leaked renders of the phones, along with the Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Buds 2a that should be launching at the same time.
