The 'world's most powerful AI data center' hit with massive class-action lawsuit — Wisconsin residents allege noise and extreme light pollution at $7.3 billion Microsoft mega-facility - Wednesday, July 8, 2026 - 16:20
  • Residents near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, file class-action lawsuit against Microsoft over “excessive noise” from its Fairwater AI data center
  • Complainants also report light pollution from the facility
  • Microsoft says it has taken “immediate steps to address the sound concerns”

While it is an inherently useful technology, AI comes with many challenges, not least the impact of data centers on the landscape and local environment. Microsoft’s new $7.3 billion AI data center in Milwaukee is demonstrating some of those challenges, having amassed complaints during construction and now a class-action lawsuit from Wisconsin residents.

Residents of Sturtevant, near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are situated just 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the Mount Pleasant “Fairwater 1” datacenter, which came online in April. Following noise during construction, the installation itself has since been blamed for “not only excessive, but consistent and pervasive” noise.

Over 1,000 homes in the Mount Pleasant area are affected, and these are represented by three citizens who filed the lawsuit.

How noisy is Microsoft’s Fairwater 1 data center?

According to the filing, “Through its operation and maintenance of the Data Center, Defendant has emitted, and continues to emit, unreasonable and excessive noise onto Plaintiffs’ properties, thereby causing property damages through private nuisance and negligence.”

While no formal test results have been published, one resident stated in the lawsuit “It sounded similar to the whirring engine of a freight train parked nearby. We heard it 24 hours a day, and eventually realized it was coming from the Microsoft campus.” This followed a period of six months when previous issues concerning noise and dust had subsided.

Meanwhile, a resident told Wisconsin Public Radio that light pollution is a problem, noting "“It was so dark out there, you could see all the stars, and now you have a hard time seeing the stars with all the light.”

The filing (reported by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) notes that the Fairwater 1 data center "generates significant noise pollution from diesel generators and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including chillers, cooling towers, air-handling units, and condenser fans."

Microsoft is yet to respond

As the demand for cloud AI increases, more installations like Fairwater 1 (up to 15 Microsoft data centers are planned for the location) need to be developed.

So far, Microsoft has responded to the previous complaints about noise and dust with street cleaners, but these concerns have made it into the filing, along with accusations that Microsoft failed to "implement adequate acoustic barriers, shields, or walls that absorb, mitigate, and/or prevent the escape of noise, thereby resulting in the offsite emission of excessive noise beyond its property."

At the other side of this argument, however, are the 375 employees at Microsoft’s Mount Pleasant facilities, many of whom live locally.

While Microsoft is yet to respond to the lawsuit, it previously posted on its blog that it will “continue to work on short-term mitigation, and [...] also install additional sound reduction components and continue to monitor sound at the site.”

Of course Samantha Morton will be the best part of The Odyssey — this 'devastating' drama you can stream now proved why long before Christopher Nolan's standing ovation - Wednesday, July 8, 2026 - 17:00

Unless you've been living under a rock (or wisely taking a social media break), you've likely been bombarded with updates about the predicted summer blockbuster The Odyssey, which had its world premiere in London earlier this week.

Interviews with its cast — which includes Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Zendaya, to name a few — are coming out thick and fast ahead of the film's release on July 17, but there's another news piece that's caught my eye.

As reported by Empire Magazine [via GamesRadar], Samantha Morton, who plays Circe in the new movie, received the first standing ovation from director Christopher Nolan's cast & crew since Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.

As a dedicated Morton-head of many years, this is the least surprising news possible to come out of The Odyssey's pre-release marketing. Every time you cast her in a film or TV show, you are guaranteed to get something unsettling, powerful and absolutely impeccable.

I could reel off a never-ending list of projects that showcase her staggering handle on her craft, from Morvern Callar and Under the Skin (which I once got to watch with her, humble brag) to The Walking Dead and The Serpent Queen.

But one devastating 2022 drama is what you need to watch to understand why her Odyssey acclaim was always written in the stars, and you can stream it right now.

Samantha Morton's standout role in She Said explains The Odyssey hype before we even see it

If Morton isn't the lead in a movie or TV show, this is what I can guarantee will happen: she'll appear in a scene for all of five minutes, deliver a masterpiece of a performance and wipe the floor with everyone around her, and leave.

The best part? She's all that you'll be thinking about whenever that story draws to a close.

Based on the above praise, I can guarantee that this is how things will shake out in The Odyssey, but this was also the case in the 2022 drama She Said. The film followed real-life journalists Megan Twohey (Carey Mulligan) and Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan), who published the report that exposes sexual abuse allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, culminating in the #MeToo movement.

Morton plays Zelda Perkins, a Miramax London assistant in the 1990s and an abuse victim and witness. She's on screen for one scene that runs under five minutes, giving testimony to Jodi about what happened during the Venice Film Festival.

It's the scene from She Said that went viral online precisely because it was also the strongest, most vulnerable, and powerful moment in the entire 129-minute runtime. That was all thanks to Morton's performance.

Even now, you can see the impact that one single scene had on whoever was watching. As one fan wrote on YouTube, "She's absolutely phenomenal, one of those rare performances in which one scene would had been worthy of an Oscar nomination even a win."

"I think that in this relatively small role, Samantha Morton stole the movie. She is absolutely riveting," a second weighed in.

Mark my words: this is exactly what we are going to see with her portrayal of Circe in The Odyssey, and I am beside myself to see it. Christopher Nolan... you are a man of great taste.

'The thing that's amazing to me is this was 3D-printed': Pentagon's SciTech supremo describes future of warfare where projectiles are made up of coconut husks and coffee grounds - Wednesday, July 8, 2026 - 17:05
  • Pentagon science advisor Joseph Jewell weighs in on the Ukraine war and integrating AI and biotech mark a paradigm shift in how the US military sees future conflicts
  • Marines recently 3D-printed shaped charges from coconut husks and coffee grounds that beat conventional explosives by 25%
  • Department of Defense is also trying to speed up innovation in the industry by offering as many as 500 patents free of charge to private companies

The Russia-Ukraine war has been devastating in its impact for those directly affected by the conflict, which has now entered its fifth year as both sides trade blows in what many feel is a prolonged stalemate stemming in part from a lack of manpower.

The conflict, or rather its asymmetrical nature, however, has many modern militaries keeping a sharp eye on events as they showcase what the future of combat might look like between two warring nations.

The US Assistant Secretary of War for Science and Technology, Joseph S. Jewell, recently spoke at length during the Defense One tech summit about how information from the conflict and inroads in AI and biotechnology continue to shape modern warfare as we know it.

Production inroads, AI integration and a focus on biotechnology

The summit saw the Assistant Secretary address a host of topics, including insights into how the Russia-Ukraine conflict is playing out and the lessons the US must learn from the ongoing war.

He addressed the fact Ukraine essentially willed its entire drone industry into existence because it was key to its survival while essentially keeping Russia's navy at bay for most of the conflict despite not having a similarly equipped fighting force at sea.

The line that carries from him, however, might be about Marines repurposing coffee grounds and coconut husks to make 3D-printed shape charges for the battlefield.

This underscores an important change that has already taken place on the modern battlefield, as researchers and military personnel increasingly push the boundaries to find the best way to resupply and rearm while also making advances in lethality in some cases.

Coffee grounds and coconut husks were only the tip of the iceberg; the Marines also attempted the same with plastic water bottles and even crushed volcanic rock, noting that the latter worked best.

Jewell said the field-made charge had cut the time to point-of-use by 99%, because it could be produced on the spot from materials "endemic in the Indo-Pacific," and even more interestingly, it showed "25% better focusing characteristics than conventionally manufactured high explosives."

The underlying story isn't just about how field-made charges are saving an enormous amount of time and money on future battlefields, but how military doctrine has changed to include 'patent holidays' to increase access to tech and foster innovation, for better or worse, at least on the Pentagon's end over the last few years.

While his focus was on Ukraine, similar lessons have been learned by the US in its on-again, off-again conflict with Iran, where the latter has resorted to using low-cost but high-volume weapons, including drones and missiles, to effectively force a stalemate over the Strait of Hormuz, indicating that a paradigm shift is in order where the side with the best, or most 'efficient' weapons does not necessarily win.

Already quite affordable, this Blink video doorbell can rival anything from the more expensive Ring line, while also offering a long battery life and IP65 weatherproofing. Also included is the Sync Module that you'll need to make everything work, but you will need to take into account that it requires a Blink Subscription Plan if you want all its functions at your fingertips.View Deal

I've tried a fair few smart home devices in my time but not the Meross smart plugs. Still, something has got to be said about the 4.6-star rating on Amazon with some very happy customers saying it's a great product. Smart plugs are a great way to turn any gadget at home into a smart one, including lamps and kettles. Where the Meross stands out from other affordable offerings is by also featuring an energy monitor — a great way to keep tabs on your usage and save money on power bills.View Deal

This is just the previous Fire TV Stick 4K rebranded to a new name. So if you already have the original, there's no need to upgrade, but for a first-time customer, you get Wi-Fi 6 support and a fast processor so you can get to your favourite streaming content that much quicker. All Fire TV Sticks now get you access to XBox Game Pass, so you don't need a console to play if you already have a subscription.View Deal

This ergonomic vertical mouse is perfect for small hands and it encourages better posture, thus reducing aches along the wrist, shoulder and shoulder blade. I use it myself (I have the white colourway) and can't recommend it highly enough, even at full price. View Deal

Securing a spot on our list of the best air fryers, our reviewer said this innovative model from Ninja was the "air fryer of my dreams". It takes a familiar double drawer design, but stacks them on top of each other, resulting in a smaller footprint. Performance is exemplary, but just make sure the food you put in isn't that big, as the drawers themselves are on the smaller side at 4.75L each.View Deal

The 2024 Paperwhite remains one of the best Kindles you can get. Its E Ink Carta 1300 screen is fantastic, page turns are quick and we gave it 4 stars in our review. My only complaint with it is that a significant chunk of its 16GB storage is taken up by the OS, which isn't really a deal breaker.View Deal

This is the biggest discount currently on Apple's latest noise-cancelling buds. So if you've been keen to upgrade from an older pair of AirPods 2 or 3, they are worth a look. If you're a Pro 2 user, though, it's not worth the upgrade. Check out our review for the full story, but the new features include heart-rate monitoring and even better ANC than before.View Deal

We called it "the best Apple Watch for most people" in our Apple Watch SE 3 review, applauding its speedy performance and classically-modern looks. Sitting comfortably within our guide to the best Apple Watch, it matches the Series 11 and Ultra 3 in speed, has a solid battery life and compact design without feeling like a budget offering.View Deal

Best deals under AU$100

We may not have tested these buds ourselves here at TechRadar, but it’s hard to ignore the 100K customer reviews on Amazon. While often discounted to this price, if you’re after dependable Bluetooth buds on a budget, these are a great option.View Deal

This entry-level doorbell has a two-year battery life, meaning you won't have to worry about hardwiring if you're renting. It also has a 150° head-to-toe view, can automatically send you parcel and person alerts, and help keep your worries at bay with continuous live view. It's also remarkably affordable right now but something has to be said for 2K footage, which the slightly more expensive Blink listed above gets you.View Deal

Read our review for the full scoop, but the Blink Outdoor 4 is an affordable home security camera from Amazon with the ability to last up to two years off batteries. It comes with an easy-to-use app and fairly good camera quality via a 1080p lens, and can store video when paired with a Blink Sync module.View Deal

Boasting a 12,000dpi 'Hero' sensor, as well as 6 programmable buttons, a 250-hour battery and onboard memory for your settings, the Logitech G305 Lightspeed Wireless Gaming Mouse is ideal for competitive play. Want to know more? Check out our review. View Deal

If you don't enjoy flossing the traditional way, use the power of water instead. Removing plaque using three different water pressure settings, this handy flosser will clean out those hard-to-reach gaps that your toothbrush can't. Plus, it's cordless, meaning you can take it on your travels too.View Deal

Sure, it's a wired controller, but this gamepad is simple to use and durable, with drift-free hall effect analog sticks. In fact, the base of the sticks also have RGB, which is fantastic at this price. Being wired, however, means this isn't ideal for couch play, but if you're a PC gamer at your desk, it'll do wonderfully well.View Deal

If you're after a really good electric toothbrush that won't cost an arm and a leg (or some teeth), then this is it. It's an entry-level oscillating brush, which means it rotates at fast speeds and may not be ideal for people with sensitive or bleeding gums as that movement can be harsh, but it sure does remove a heck of a lot of plaque and keeps your teeth healthy. View Deal

Amazon's Echo Dot it's a great smart speaker with decent sound and Alexa built-in. It also has motion detection and can measure temperature, which is handy if you have a connected thermostat. It is a little long in the tooth now, having released in 2022, but it's unbeatable at this price.View Deal

This portable espresso machine is a fantastic option for those constantly on the move. It uses Nespresso pods and made such good coffee that it earned a 4-star review from us. And while already affordable for what it can do, it's now cheaper still and, honestly, a very tempting impulse buy.View Deal

The Ninja Creami is great and all, but paying almost AU$300 for an ice cream maker is a lot — but this one from Cuisinart costs only AU$86.99 for Prime Day and also takes a lot less space too! It's a versatile machine that makes ice cream, slushies, milkshakes, sorbets, and mix-ins to truly earn its space in the kitchen. You can even combine up to three flavours with three included dessert cups.View Deal

This little pod machine is very popular among TechRadar's Aussie team. We've had past and present staff say how much they love it, and they'd even buy it at full price. With a very compact footprint and plenty of Vertuo pods to choose from, you'll get delicious coffee at just the press of a button. Also available in Pacific Blue, Mango Yellow and Lilac for the same price.View Deal

This food processor's biggest drawcard is its small footprint (30cm tall and 16cm wide), making it great for those with smaller kitchens, but it also has a powerful 650W motor to help blitz foods to slice, grate, chop and knead in seconds. This is the lowest price we've seen for the MultiPro Go, and you can read the full review here.View Deal

Our 1More Sonoflow review praised the comfort of the headphones, as well as the excellent active noise cancelling and up to 70 hours of battery life. Honestly, at this price, it's excellent value for everyday listening.View Deal

A 100Hz-refresh-rate monitor for just AU$100? Sign me up! This display from Lenovo may be a bit small at under 24 inches with a 1080p resolution, but it uses IPS technology for sharp image quality. This is price is the lowest we've seen this monitor go on Amazon.View Deal

These AirPods lack active noise cancellation but you still get great audio and personalised spatial audio with dynamic head tracking without having to pay too much. Additionally, a battery life of up to five hours on a single charge and 30 hours with the included carry case will keep you listening for longer.
Prefer noise cancellation as well? Grab the AirPods 4 with ANC for AU$219 (or 27% off).View Deal

Offering poised and revealing sound, along with excellent comfort and microphone quality, this saving is one to consider if you've been on the hunt for a quality pair of earbuds. Offering “incredible sound”, the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds have all the power and quality you’d expect from a Bose-branded item while providing the benefits of an open-ear form factor. The Immersive sound is excellent, and there’s also up to seven hours of play time and up to 48 hours of standby time. They simply just work and work very well.View Deal

We gave these stunning earbuds 4.5 stars in our review as they have class-leading audio handling and impeccable sound quality that rivals the best wireless earbuds. With balanced sound, effective ANC and a great battery life, these Sennheiser buds will make any audiophile smile. View Deal

Read our review for the full lowdown on why these are the ideal runners headphones. Importantly, this Pro 2 version that improves the sound quality by combining the bone conduction tech with an air conduction speaker. This discount beats the price from Black Friday last year.View Deal

Nearly as good as the gen 1 QuietComfort Ultra, the SC misses out on the Immersive Audio mode. There'll also be a little difference in sound quality as they process sound differently, but it's still excellent, as is the ANC performance. You'll also get a soft case for this foldable headphone rather than the hard one for the more expensive set.View Deal

The 5th-gen version is out now, but it's our Sennheiser Momentum 4 review that scored a full five stars, where we called these headphones "unbeatable". With active noise-cancellation, 60-hours of battery life and excellent sound quality, there are few pairs that can compete with the Momentum 4.View Deal

The original QC Ultra was already an excellent set of ANC cans, which sadly got knocked off its perch as the best by Sony's XM6 headphones. But these 2025 Bose QC Ultras reassert the brand's true mastery of sound and noise cancellation. Offering lively, engaging sound and Immersive Audio for a spatial treatment to any tune, I think they also look rather dapper. View Deal

Admittedly this isn't a fantastic price on an older Apple product, but not listing this discounted premium headphones just doesn't feel right considering how popular they can be. Sure, Apple's in-ear buds are arguably even more popular, but the cans are also coveted and cheaper than the gen 2 model.View Deal

This Bluetooth speaker has a 30W output, supports aptX, is waterproof, and can have two units paired together for stereo. All that for around the hundred-dollar mark is excellent value in my books.View Deal

Clean, detailed sound, full protection against dust and water and all packaged in a gorgeous body, the Bose SoundLink Flex is a Bluetooth speaker you'll want to take with you everywhere you go.View Deal

The JBL Flip 7 outperforms its predecessor, getting a full five stars in our review. The sound is a lot punchier than before and that's without compromising details across the range. It even gets a bigger battery to last you up to 16 hours and makes a case for itself at a very good price indeed.View Deal

Not only can the Charge 6 last up to 28 hours on a single charge, but it can also be used as a power bank to top up your devices via its USB-C port. Sound quality is energetic and detailed in equal measure, and it’s built to withstand virtually anything you wish to throw at it. View Deal

It might be expensive compared to other Bluetooth speakers you can get, but if you want big and punchy sound, this is the party speaker you should reach for. It will even charge your handheld devices for you thanks to its two-way USB-C port. Bose wraps up excellent sound quality and an enjoyable user experience in an attractive, outdoor-friendly package.View Deal

Vacuum cleaners

This is a very different Dreame R10 to the one we've previously reviewed on TechRadar, but if it performs anything like the light-coloured version that has since been discontinued, then I think this is excellent value. For not a lot of money, this appliance promises up to 45 minutes of runtime and a bendy wand to get under furniture. It even comes with a wall-mount attachment.View Deal

Scoring almost five stars in our Shark Detect Pro Cordless vacuum cleaner review, we called this vacuum "a wonder". Versatile, powerful, offering automatic power adjustment and equally good at cleaning hard floors as it is on carpet, this is one of the best vacuums on the market, at a stellar price.View Deal

If you don't need the latest and greatest machine from the British brand, this is not a bad vacuum cleaner to get. You'll get up to 40 minutes of fade-free power, enough for a small apartment, plus three other attachments besides the Digital Motorbar for versatile cleaning. We have seen it for under AU$340, but this deal isn't too bad at half price. View Deal

We haven't tested this cordless vacuum ourselves but user reviews are glowing and I think that says something. For quick and daily vacuuming, this is great and excellent value and is currently back to its all-time low price on Amazon.View Deal

This Roborock wet-dry vacuum will leave your hard floors sparkling clean thanks to powerful suction and effective cleaning. It can get up close to edges and the whole body can lay completely flat to help getting underneath tricky to reach places. This price is equal to the lowest we have seen on Amazon and is a great saving on an excellent floor washer – read our review for more info.View Deal

In our Dreame L10s Ultra review, we called this handy little gadget a "a robot vacuum powerhouse" that will "do as it's told" – what more do you want from a robot vacuum? Seeing a massive discount (and one of the lowest prices we have seen on Amazon), this ultra machine automatically detects floor types, empties itself, has a useful onboard camera and an intuitive mobile app.View Deal

Where this Dreame differs from all the others on this page is that if you don't want it to mop (do a vacuum-only run), it can drop its mop pads in the base station by itself. It's also pretty powerful and scored 4 stars in our Dreame X40 Ultra review. It's now two generations old but I'd still recommend it today, especially at this price. View Deal

Want the latest Dreame tech? Released just last month, this robovac packs everything that Dreame models are good at — excellent suction, decent mopping, superb obstacle avoidance, pet-zone cleaning and so much more — into a sleek machine. OK, so it looks like all the others, but c'mon, you can't tell me the white with metallic accents don't fit into any home.View Deal

This is the robovac I would consider buying if I didn't already have a high-end Dreame machine that's been cleaning my home like... a dream. This Roborock is slimlined to crawl under furniture (no navigation puck here), and can raise not just its mop pads, but its side brush to avoid scattering and excessive tangling. Its headline act, however, has to be its cleaning prowess — our Roborock Saros 10R review didn't score 4.5 stars for nothing!View Deal

Coffee machines

The best entry-level bean-to-cup coffee maker has received a good discount for Prime Day. It's simple to use, taking care of the grinding, tamping and pouring for you. This at-home espresso machine is perfect for hobbyist baristas and coffee connoisseurs alike and has long held a position on our round-up of the best espresso machines for good reason. This manual coffee machine streamlines the brewing process from beans to latte with its integrated conical burr grinder, steam wand and precise espresso extraction. View Deal

We rate the Vertuo Creatista as the best Nespresso machine out there thanks to its use of the Vertuo pods, which come in a range of cup and mug sizes and an integrated milk frother. It performs exceptionally well, too, and will brew your morning cuppa in no time at all.View Deal

It's an expensive machine but we like it so much that it scored 4.5 stars in our De'Longhi Eletta Explore review. Capable of making both hot and cold coffee brews, this bean-to-cup machine produces delicious results, although it's not without its quirks. Our reviewer thought its water tank design was a little annoying and wasn't too thrilled with the two-carafe milk system, but if those aren't going to be issues for you, this could be a good investment.View Deal

Air fryers

This big air fryer has multiple accessories to keep clean, but there's no denying this Sunbeam unit is a fantastic addition to any kitchen. It's capable of cooking in separate zones, complete with separate trays to maximise the space or one huge 11.4L zone. Food is roasted to perfection, whether it's a full chicken or small portions of fries or vegetables.View Deal

We haven't tested Philips' dual basket air fryer, but considering how much we've loved the brand's other kitchen appliances, it's hard to not make a mention of this offer. This 9L air fryer has drawers of different sizes, which makes it easy to cook a main and a side together, and promises to sync cooking times if needed. View Deal

This compact air fryer packs 1700W of power into a portable design, with two borosilicate glassware containers that serve as both frying baskets and serving dishes. The borosilicate means they can also withstand extreme temperatures, making it easy to take your favourite foods from frozen to crispy, and it's safer to use than any non-stick basket. The Crispi also comes with two removable crisping grates and two snap-on container lids for easy food-storage post-feast.View Deal

Ever cooked with steam in an air fryer? Now you can with this Philips two-drawer air fryer. In my Philips 5000 Series Dual Basket XXL Air Fryer Steam review, I said that it cooks everything really well, but there are some caveats to keep in mind when it comes to the use of steam. Still, it's absolutely worth the investment if you want to upgrade from an old air fryer and you have the space for it.View Deal

It's got a cult-like following and two members of our own staff are massive fans. If you love your chilled desserts – ice creams, gelatos, smoothies – but want to control your calorie intake, you really should consider getting the Ninja Creami. This Deluxe edition gets you three containers, which is great value at this price.View Deal

The Ninja Slushi lets you skip the ice and still enjoy perfectly smooth icy drinks with very little effort. Whether you're craving a frappe, smoothie, or even a cheeky spiked slushi, its multiple drink modes have you covered. Check out our Ninja Slushi review for the full rundown. View Deal

While we haven't tested the Vitamix Ascent 2300i for ourselves here at TechRadar, our colleagues at T3 love it, calling it a "real quality blender that will last longer than most things in your home" in their review. The only downside was the asking price. Now, though, the price has dropped considerably.View Deal

We might be in the middle of winter, but there's no denying some parts of Australia need a good fan year round. This Vornado model creates tornado-like air flow that circulates around the room. Note that this is the smallest model in the range, ideal for bedrooms. View Deal

Personal care

Whisk away facial hair in one smooth motion using Manscaped's Beard Hedger beard trimmer. With 20 length settings, edge trimming capabilities and a fully waterproof body, you'll be perfecting your stubble in no time. We have seen this trimmer go lower in price before, but we think it's such a talented performer that we felt compelled to include it here.View Deal

Fitted with a flexible head, this shaver is designed to glide against the shape of your face, while onboard sensors will allow it to adapt the cutting power to your beard's length. Speaking of which, it's got 5 length settings to suit different needs and it holds its own while in the shower too. View Deal

The Dreame Gleame hair dryer is an even more affordable alternative to the bigger brands. Its motor spins at a mighty fast 110,000 RPM for fast airflow and quick drying, plus built-in ion technology results in smooth, shiny hair. Not to mention, the slim, lightweight build make it comfortable to hold. View Deal

This very significant price drop might well tempt you to get yourself what is arguably one of the best hair dryers money can buy. There are a plethora of sensors here that make sure your scalp remains healthy, automatically adjusting heat and airflow depending on how far away the dryer is from your head. You also get a bunch of magnetic attachments for a styled blow dry too.View Deal

The Oral-B iO 6 is a smart brush that can recognise your personal brushing style and provide feedback via the companion app to improve it. It also features a pressure sensor and an interactive display, as well a ring timer letting you know when to move on to a different section of your pearly whites. View Deal

If you didn't know what a 'sonic' brush is, it's quieter and gentler than an oscillating electric toothbrush (like Oral-B). The DiamondClean 9000 has 4 cleaning modes, and one of them gets you 3 intensities. This value pack gets you a his-and-hers version, plus the glass is actually the charger.View Deal

Home entertainment & Hi-Fi

The Amazon Fire TV Cube combines all the benefits of a streaming device with Alexa support. It works as a smart speaker so you can control your smart home devices with it, but it also provides access to every streaming app you can think of. Throw in Dolby Vision, HDR, and Dolby Atmos, and it’s everything you could want. So why not grab a streaming device that's also a smart speaker?View Deal

It's often the #1 bestselling soundbar on Amazon and that doesn't surprise me in the least. It was very well received by experts at its price point when it launched in 2023, and has remained a top option for users too. And at this price, it's a fantastic budget option with Dolby Atmos support, plenty of bass and a wide soundstage.View Deal

In our Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar review, we said this soundbar rivals the Sonos Arc, which is the best Sonos soundbar we've tried. The Smart Ultra is compact, beautifully built, and offers plenty of control options to go with its wide, detailed sound. View Deal

This Sony Bluetooth turntable is as fuss-free as they come with regard to setup and getting your favourite vinyl records spinning. Whether you're playing via wired or wireless speakers, it delivers a delightfully musical sound that will satisfy vinyl beginners or those looking for a more hands-off approach. View Deal

We haven't reviewed these KEF bookshelf speakers, but our esteemed colleagues at What Hi-Fi? have and deem them to "set the performance standard for stereo speakers anywhere close to this price". Phones, tablets & accessories

I have a feeling the price of this budget phone will drop but that's not a promise, it's a hope. It's still worth it at this price, as long as you don't need the most powerful phone with all the bells and whistles. We called it a "competent all-rounder" in our Samsung Galaxy A57 review, but we also noted that it will not wow you.View Deal

This Motorola handset is packed full of value if you don't need the latest and bestest phone on the market. For your money, you get a vivid display, impressive battery life and very good everyday performance. Don't expect it to handle heavy gaming, but its plenty for the average user.View Deal

Announced in October 2024, this compact iPad has a decently powerful chip under the hood, and this exceptional discount is icing on the Apple. With Apple Pencil and Smart Folio support, this 8.3-inch slate is not just portable, but would be a handy device to have if you're working on the go.View Deal

I love the Matcha Green more than the usual black variant, but if you're looking for the smallest and cheapest Kindle, this is it. You get a 6-inch screen that is an older generation E Ink Carta 1200, but still does a splendid job of displaying text. There's the standard 16GB of storage but Kindle OS takes up a fair chunk of that, so keep in mind you'll only have about 10GB of usable storage here.View Deal

With more storage, a brighter screen and wireless charging, the Paperwhite Signature Edition is arguably better value than the base model above if you think you'll make full use of the storage and its wireless charging capabilities. If not, you're better off going with the standard Paperwhite.View Deal

The Kindle Colorsoft is one of the best ereaders with a colour display, even offering a feature to make the hues more vivid. While I wouldn't recommend at full price, this discount makes it the best Kindle deal yet since it's down to a record-low price.
If you'd like more storage than the 16GB version, the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition is also 27% off to AU$326.View Deal

Kindles are known for their reading capabilities, but with the Kindle Scribe, you get that and a whole lot more. With a wide range of writing features, you can take notes, create sketches and brainstorm like a pro. I love its 10.2-inch glare-free screen with an ambient light sensor, and it's battery life is excellent too. It's now the previous-gen model, but arguably better value than the 2025 3rd-gen release. View Deal

Samsung's answer to the AirTag, the SmartTag 2 works with select Samsung phones to help you find mislaid items. It has a built-in hole for easier attachments, up to 700 days of battery life and it's water-resistant. If you're always losing stuff, this is a worthy investment. Just be sure to use the additional 5% off coupon for the best price.View Deal

The latest release of the popular AirTag comes with a better locator sound and more precise location tracker than previously, making this the Bluetooth tracker to get for Apple users. While the single unit is discounted to AU$39, the 4-pack is better value as it brings the price of each AirTag to AU$32.75.View Deal

Power banks & chargers

This compact mid-sized power bank is a great option for fast charging your phone on longer trips where a smaller capacity power bank won't cut it. The T2055 is one of our top-rated options in our best power bank buyers guide, and is a sweet deal at this price. View Deal

At one of the lowest prices we have seen, this is a great deal for a premium power bank. The Anker 737 gets excellent results in our best power banks guide, and has a 140W output, a 24,000 mAh capacity (86.4Wh, so flight safe) and an excellent 85% efficiency. View Deal

This neat little charger doesn’t take up much space and offers USB-A and USB-C ports, capable of fast charging most base model phones from Apple, Google and Samsung. It won’t achieve the maximum wattage requirements of fast charging on more high-end models (such as the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL at 37W, or the Samsung Galaxy S25 Plus/Ultra and iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max at 45W), but it’s a handy travel solution.View Deal

Outputting a maximum of 65W via either one of its USB-C ports (and a maximum of 22.5W via its USB-A port), this charger isn’t just capable of fast charging top iPhones and Samsung Galaxy devices at the highest speed, it’s also worth considering as a laptop charger replacement with its compact size, provided you have a sufficiently capable USB-C cable and your laptop can charge via said cable.View Deal

A 100W charger might seem overkill, but if you’re thinking of simultaneously charging a laptop, phone, set of earbuds and a smartwatch, this is certainly a device to consider. The two top-most USB-C ports can output at a maximum of 100W, while the bottom USB-C port delivers up to 30W and the USB-A port up to 22.5W.View Deal

Fitness trackers & smartwatches

The Samsung Galaxy Ring is a worthwhile fitness device for folks that don’t like the feeling of a watch. Water resistant at up to 100 metres and available in three colours, the Galaxy Ring can track steps, sleep, heart rate and more. It comes with a charging cradle, with the Ring capable of lasting up to seven days on a full charge. Remember to try the sizing kit first.View Deal

We called this the best smart ring for battery life (rated up to 12 days + a further 150 days with the charging case) while also being a more affordable option than Oura and Samsung at full price. The Gen 2 added a sleep apnoea tracker to make up for the price hike over its predecessor. Again, be sure to source the sizing kit first as not all smart rings are made the same.View Deal

This smart ring differentiated itself from players like Oura and Samsung by being a more lightweight and comfortable option, weighing in from 2.4 grams for its smallest size (compared to Oura’s smallest size 4 ring at 3.3 grams). The Ultrahuman Ring Air does have the usual sensors found in this price range — heart rate, movement, sleep, skin temperature, etc — but what stands this one apart is the very thorough data presentation in its companion app. And you don't need a special subscription to access major metrics.View Deal

This is a fantastic price for a fantastic smartwatch that we awarded four stars in our Huawei Watch Fit 4 Pro review. Yes, it looks like an Apple Watch, but it also acts like one, offering excellent battery life, accurate health tracking and a bright display. Plus, perhaps most importantly, it plays nicely with both iOS and Android devices.View Deal

A fantastic discount on the Apple Watch 11, if I say so myself. And, at this price, there's no need to compromise and pick up the SE 3 that's also going real cheap right now because you get additional health monitoring here, including sleep apnoea and blood pressure checks. View Deal

One of the best-looking hybrid smart watches on the market, blending analog and digital design layouts, the Scanwatch 2 is probably your best bet if you want a classic design and some of the health tracking features of a typical smart watch. In our Withings ScanWatch 2 review, we found that the companion app was quite easy to use and we liked the inclusion of a skin temperature tracker, though we would have liked some more smart features and the small digital display may not be for everyone.View Deal

An upgraded version of a watch we proudly awarded five stars, this handy fitness tracker features solar power charging, allowing it to last much longer than the standard model. It's a rugged wrist piece and it's intended for heavy-duty activities.View Deal

The 'S' in the name stands for 'small', meaning this specific Garmin was made for petite wrists and features a 42mm vibrant OLED display. You also get Multiband GPS, an intuitive menu navigation, excellent battery life, plenty of Garmin fitness features... and, oh, did I mention the OLED display?View Deal

If you want the most powerful wearable from Apple, then this one is it. Cameras

This is Canon's first compact camera in years, picking up where the fabulous and popular PowerShot G7 X series left off. It features a brand-new 22.3MP 1.4-inch sensor that boasts Canon's trusty Dual Pixel CMOS II autofocus and it has an integrated fan to keep things cool for the content creator. With plenty of grunt under the hood, this is the best price yet on this relatively new camera.View Deal

You may not have heard of this brand and dismiss it out of hand but, for its price, our colleagues at Digital Camera World rated it with a 4-star score in their review. Even at full price, it represents excellent value, offering a front screen that even a GoPro doesn't get you. Admittedly its image quality lacks against the big players, but we have it on good authority that it's reliable, easy to use and comes with plenty of accessories in the box.View Deal

This point-and-shoot camera fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, and makes content creation as easy as possible. You quite literally just need to point and shoot. There are just a few control buttons on the rear, but the tiny 2-inch flip-up touchscreen adds functionality too. It's capable of 4K/30p videos and 20MP stills. View Deal

With some serious grunt under the hood of this palm-friendly camera, you get AI-powered subject tracking, up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range and even 4K/120p slo-mo recording. This camera has since been succeeded by the 6th-gen model but it's still a fabulous shot (pardon the pun).View Deal

While it's not a huge upgrade over the previous model, the TG-6 is no longer available to buy, making this the best choice if you'd like a near-indestructible camera that you can take underwater.View Deal

This might be an entry-level camera but it has some advanced features. Anyone who wants to shoot wildlife or sports will be thrilled with the 40fps burst speed, and it inherits some of the tracking precision from Canon's higher-end cameras too. With a 24.2MP full-frame sensor, it's one of the lightest cameras available today and represents excellent value for a beginner even though this isn't the best price it's been.View Deal

It's been cheaper than this before, but this is still a fantastic saving on an excellent Nikon full-framer. The 24.6MP sensor can shoot at up to 120fps, records 6K video, has built-in image stabilisation and has dual card slots, including one for a CFexpress device to make full use of its speed.View Deal

This price includes a 20% discount at checkout.View Deal

We call this an "all-round surveillance solution" in our 70mai Dash Cam A510 review, due to it including both front-facing and rear-facing cameras in the box. They're quality cameras, too, recording 2.7K footage from the front and 1080p at the back, complete with wide fields of view. Built-in GPS, 360º rotation for in-car recording and easy install only add to its appeal.View Deal

PC peripherals

The Logitech MX Master range have been some of my favourite mice of all time, thanks to the ergonomic design, multiple customisable buttons, and a second scroll wheel for horizontal scrolling (or for flicking through multiple browser tabs). The most striking feature of this mechanical keyboard is its thinness, but it also comes with the promise of sub-1ms latency and 8,000Hz hyper-polling. Over 9,000 people have tuned in so far

OK, 'tuned in' isn't exactly the right phrase here, but my team and I are really grateful to all the readers who joined us through Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days sale so far. Hopefully our coverage over the past two days has been helpful and you've been able to bag a few discounts on items that have been on your shopping list for a while.

If you're just joining us now, don't worry, we're still rolling on with our coverage here at TechRadar and will continue to do so until the very end. Amazon has decided to make its Prime Day sale a week-long event after all, ending Monday, July 13.

Thanks, Jeff.

But don't dally — if you need something, add it to your cart and check out right away. Just be sure you're a Prime member to see the biggest deals possible and keep en eye out for the extra savings (via coupons) that some listings have.

The best Prime Day deals are free

Who doesn't love a freebie?

There isn't just one free thing to enjoy, but three, depending on your personal preference for reading or listening. You can sign up for one, or two or, heck, why not all three?! After all, freebies!

OK, enough waffling – I'll get to the point.

You can get Music Unlimited, Kindle Unlimited and Audible for free right now — or rather with extended free trials if you're a new or returning customer. You get three months free of Kindle Unlimited and Audible, but Music Unlimited is arguably better value with four months free and includes audiobooks too.

That's a lot of reading and listening if you ask me. I've already signed up for Kindle Unlimited and am enjoying the Bill Bryson-edited Seeing Further: The Story of Science and the Royal Society (yeah, I'm a history and science nerd).

Wake up and smell the coffee – just AU$88

The Nespresso Vertuo Pop is the famed coffee maker's smallest machine, yet it doesn't scrimp on features. Being part of the Vertuo lineup, it uses a wider range of pods that can brew a range of coffee sizes, from single espresso all the way up to a full mug.

This machine has been one of our faves here at TechRadar ever since it launched in 2023, with a couple of my colleagues using it themselves at home and none of any complaints. It works just as you'd expect and couldn't be simpler. All you need to do is pop a pod in and press a button, the machine takes care of the rest – it's that easy.

The AU$229 RRP is already good value in my opinion, but there's a pretty good discount that sees the compact pod machine drop to just AU$88 a... pop.

I have the white (or what's labelled as grey) Logitech Lift and, after a few years of daily use, it's looking a little worse for wear. I'm sorely tempted to swap it out for this Graphite version instead, and it's cheaper than I've every seen it before.

The previous low price was a little over AU$67 for the PC version of the Black variant, which makes the current 55% discount the best price yet.

I will have to note that it's designed for smaller hands like mine, so people with large mitts might not like its ergonomics — your little finger is likely to drag along your desk. Otherwise, it's an ergonomic mouse I wouldn't swap for anything else.

Quote of the day by former Nintendo President Satoru Iawata: 'It will require many years and months for the majority of video game purchases to become digital' — correctly predicting dominance of digital games today back in 2009 - Wednesday, July 8, 2026 - 18:00

The way that consumers buy video games is changing, with Sony recently announcing that it would cease the production of new PlayStation game discs in January 2028 in a bid to push consumers towards more profitable digital purchases.

It's a big shift for the $500+ billion dollar video game industry, which once had a significant retail presence in the US, but one that has been predicted for some time.

A matter of time

Speaking in an investor Q&A session all the way back in 2009, then Nintendo president and Satoru Iwata correctly stated that it would take "20 years or so" for digital distribution to render physical copies in stores obsolete.

Quote of the day

This article is part of TechRadar Pro's QOTD project to provide an insight into the minds of the brightest and most recognized figures in the technology industry today and in years gone by. Read the full series here.

He dismissed notions that it could happen sooner as "radical" and argued that it would take a significant number of years for consumer behaviour to change.

His belief has been proven correct by empirical data as Nintendo's latest financial report revealed that the proportion of digital sales have just surpassed physical ones for the first time in the company's 137 year history.

While it seems safe assume that Sony's next console will not feature disc reader, and credible reports suggest Microsoft-owned competitor Xbox headed the same way, Nintendo is ironically the last major industry player that seems fully committed to physical releases — at least for the time being.

Part of a wider trend

Digital game sales are even more dominant on other platforms, hence the Sony decision to ditch physical formats entirely.

According to data from market research firm Ampere Analysis, when the PlayStation 4 originally launched in 2013 just 13% of games sold for Sony platforms were digital.

12 years later in 2025, and the share of digital game sales had steadily grown to almost 80%. Unless plans change, this will presumably be 100% come 2028 — almost exactly two decades since Iwata's 20 year prediction.

PlayStation-owned Audeze has 'some potential game studio collaborations' in the works for its Maxwell 2 ReSkin earcup designs, as well as plans to bring it to other models - Wednesday, July 8, 2026 - 18:30

On a recent visit to head-fi brand Audeze's headquarters in California, I had the chance to talk to the brand about the recent ReSkin feature it launched for its Maxwell 2 gaming headset.

This new feature for its excellent planar magnetic driver-powered gaming headset allows owners to customize their set by swapping in funky earcup designs to inject some colour, flair, and personality into their gaming accessory.

The earcups have been so popular that a bunch of the first designs have sold out, with marketing director, Peter James, telling me that "the one that's sold the most is the all-seeing eye. That one actually sold out of its first run."

Indeed, of the six designs or sets that Audeze launched in May, only one of them is available to buy as of right now on the brand's website, and two — the all-seeing eye and the very limited edition Dia De Los Muertos set — are not even listed at all.

However, there could be big things on the horizon with the PlayStation-owned Audeze having "some potential game studio collaborations" on the way in the future, according to James.

This could be an opportunity for a collaboration with a huge PlayStation series or two in the future, given Audeze is under Sony Interactive Entertainment's (SIE) roof now.

Could we see a spectacular God of War Laufey ReSkin featuring Faye? Could we, Maxwell 2 owners, be wearing some Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet artwork in the future? How about a profile shot of Wolverine adorning each earcup?

There are some truly exciting potential collaborations to consider given the relationship between Audeze and PlayStation.

And Audeze doesn't intend for the ReSkin designs to stop there: "We're really just getting started at this point.", James tells me.

"We're not intending this reskin program to be limited to Maxwell 2; that's just where it's starting."

I asked whether there might be a possibility of fans submitting their own designs in the future. "I don't think we're going to do 'design your own,' but we'll almost certainly be doing some things where people can submit designs and maybe run an online poll or competition to see what people vote on to select."

He went on to add that, as well as the exciting prospect of gaming collaborations, there are "more in-house designs that we'll be releasing on a monthly cadence."

Audeze has previous form with working with external collaborators from studio artists and musicians in relation to some headphones — when it comes to those super slick wooden rings that you can see on the likes of the LCD-2 and LCD-3 sets, for example — and it seems that the ReSkin program has the potential to unlock some big-hitting collaborations further down the line to continue that trend.

Can't afford a high-powered graphics card? This DIY engineer made his own GPU out of 8,192 RISC-V chips - Wednesday, July 8, 2026 - 18:40
  • YouTuber bitluni has unveiled a RISC-V DIY Graphics Processing Unit
  • Builder has a library of insane DIY projects on his YouTube channel
  • RISC-V microcontrollers were sourced from AliExpress

YouTuber bitluni has unveiled his latest project, which might put any concerns you have over GPU pricing into context. The German DIYer, who has built up a strong following with his selection of intriguing and off-the-wall projects, has assembled a GPU using a large collection of affordable RISC-V microcontrollers (MCUs).

While the results are impressive for a DIY build, the GPU is unfortunately quite modest, and would probably have been abandoned long before now had a PCB design firm not got in touch to explore a partnership over the build.

Demonstrating the project on his channel, bitluni – real name Matthias Balwierz – expressed how difficult the build was, and how it almost drove him mad.

8000+ RISC-V MCUs output at 320x200 resolution

In his latest video, bitluni recalls a previous attempt at building a GPU in late 2025 which lead to PCB designers Altium getting involved, explaining, “The clusters I made before were already challenging my sanity. I thought I was done with the topic, but the budget and these tools would allow for a cluster of a different magnitude, and the magnitude I had in mind was just insane.”

Pushing things to the next level is a hallmark of bitluni’s videos, and the finished build has an incredible 8,192 RISC-V CH570 microcontrollers, each running at 100 MHz, with 12KB of SRAM. These are mounted on blades, which went through several revisions as the PCB company declared them “too complicated.”

Each CH570 has an array of LEDs mounted, and these correspond to each MCU, and the equivalent QVGA pixel. With 8,192 MCUs, the resulting 320x200 might seem modest, but bitluni already has plans for a more power version with 32,000 MCUs.

Graphics or hashing?

The spike in GPU prices before the AI boom was thanks to industrial-scale cryptocurrency hashing, which graphics cards a particularly suited to. It is this relationship between hashing and graphics that gives bitluni’s project some hope beyond displaying images and video.

Identifying the serial port as the bottleneck to the project’s success as a working (if unwieldy) GPU, bitluni has appealed for help from his community of viewers to find a workaround, but that didn’t bring the project to a close.

Changing tack, he used the microcontrollers for hashing and found it outperformed his PC’s 8 core CPU, with a low 4 watt power draw, so perhaps there is a use for this approach after all.

The answers to today's Connections, game #1124, are…

  • YELLOW: NON-ALCOHOLIC DESIGNATORS: NA, SPIRIT-FREE, VIRGIN, ZERO-PROOF
  • GREEN: MUSIC PUBLICATIONS: BILLBOARD, PITCHFORK, ROLLING STONE, SPIN
  • BLUE: KINDS OF RUGS: PERSIAN, PRAYER, SHAG, THROW
  • PURPLE: PONTIAC MODELS: FIREBIRD, G6, GRAND PRIX, TRANS AM
  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: Perfect

A charmed game without mistakes.

As a former music journalist I was duty bound to connect the four MUSIC PUBLICATIONS in BILLBOARD, ROLLING STONE, SPIN and PITCHFORK, and was rewarded with a green.

Fortunately, I also resisted the temptation of linking VIRGIN and PRAYER in a cobbled together Madonna grouping, deciding instead that PRAYER and SHAG must have something to do with carpeting.

With eight tiles left I took a risk collecting the four tiles I thought sounded vaguely like sporty cars and got lucky.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

I digress, as we weren’t looking for dieting advice but instead things that could be applied to lips — of which there are many possibilities.

Fortunately, despite the high number of words in the search they were all short and easy to spot, with the biggest challenge provided by the 13-letter-long spangram.

Japanese firm will continue producing Blu-ray Disc drives as another iconic company announces end of an era for physical discs — Buffalo will sell ODDs at higher prices until stocks run out - Wednesday, July 8, 2026 - 19:35
  • Buffalo reverses Blu-ray exit decision after securing more components
  • Customers face 33-51% price hikes for remaining portable drive stock
  • Manufacturing will eventually cease once current component supply runs out

Japanese firm Buffalo has reversed its decision to stop selling Blu-ray drives (via PC Watch), announcing it will continue selling several portable models after securing additional supply of components that were previously unavailable.

This comes after an earlier February 2026 announcement that it would suspend the sale of Blu-ray drives in July 2026 due to component shortages – not a lack of demand.

However, customers are set to pay a premium for Buffalo’s renewed sales due to ongoing global semiconductor shortages, rising material costs and higher overall manufacturing costs.

Limited supply leads to hefty price hikes

For example, the BRXL-PTV6U3 model bundled with writing software sees the biggest increase of 51%, from ¥16,940 ($104) to ¥25,630 ($158). Buffalo’s BRXL-PT6U3 model also sees a 44% price hike, and the BRXL-PTWOU3 increases in cost by 33%.

Additionally, even though the company continues to sell Blu-ray drives at a higher cost to maintain supply for customer demand, production will only continue while newly sourced components last, implying that Buffalo itself is facing major supply struggles.

No final end date has been shared due to the unpredictability of production volumes, shipping volumes and retail inventory levels, but once the parts are no longer available, manufacturing will stop and sales will likely end permanently.

More broadly, it marks ongoing challenges in the industry, with Pioneer confirming it would be withdrawing from the optical disc drive business in 2025. LG also stopped manufacturing new drives, and Sony shipped its final consumer Blu-ray recorders in Japan implying a relatively strong market as other regions dwindled.

Some manufacturers are still clinging on

However, earlier this year Verbatim Japan and I-O Data publicly committed to continuing Blu-ray drive development (via Tom’s Hardware) even after major players exited, arguing that demand remains strong for customers who need long-term offline storage, like photographers and videographers, governments, businesses and archives.

“We have once again recognized that the need to ‘record data I want to keep onto a disc I have on hand [sic]’ continues to genuinely exist,” the two companies said in a joint statement.

However, optical storage does face competition from the generally pricier, but far more convenient rival that is cloud storage. Local storage via SSDs and HDDs is also often favored by many.

Ultimately, despite continued demand for some markets in Japan, likely driven by anime consumption and a relatively strong but declining movie rental business, the Blu-ray market is no longer big enough to guarantee a stable supply of components. With news that Buffalo, too, could soon exit the market after a second wind, it could mark the end of the Blu-ray era.

AirPods Pro 3 just dropped to AU$299 for Prime Day, and it’s the lowest Amazon price we’ve seen - Wednesday, July 8, 2026 - 20:08

Right on cue, Amazon Prime Day in Australia has delivered a much better price on the Apple AirPods Pro 3, dropping Apple’s latest noise-cancelling earbuds to just AU$299.

That’s a mighty AU$130 saving on their AU$429 RRP, and more importantly, it’s the lowest price we’ve seen for the AirPods Pro 3 on Amazon.

Considering they launched at a higher price than their predecessor, this Prime Day deal makes them a far more tempting option for iPhone users who have been waiting for a deeper discount.

I’ve been using the Pro 3 since they launched in September and, while I was initially unsure how much better they could really be than the Pro 2, I’ve had to concede that Apple’s updated earbuds are something special.

The noise cancellation, fit and overall sound quality all make them easy to recommend, and this AU$299 price makes that recommendation even easier.

If you use an iPhone and want excellent noise cancellation, a secure fit and seamless Apple device switching, the AirPods Pro 3 are for you. This Prime Day deal is the lowest Amazon price we’ve seen, so it’s well worth considering before the sale ends.View Deal

If you’re a devoted iPhone user, there’s a good chance the AirPods Pro 3 are already on your radar.

If you want a deeper breakdown before buying, our Apple AirPods Pro 3 review covers their features, sound quality and noise-cancelling performance in detail.

My audio-loving colleague Becky Scarrott described them as the earbuds for “iPhone owners who value great, shut-out-the-world noise cancellation”, and that lines up with my own experience.

As soon as you put the Pro 3s in your ears and turn on ANC, they do a remarkable job of cutting out the world around you.

I’ve worn them while walking along busy roads and even while vacuuming at home, and in both cases, the AirPods Pro 3 have made it far easier to focus on whatever I’m listening to.

They’re not the cheapest earbuds around, even with this Prime Day discount, but at AU$299 they become a much more compelling pick among the best wireless earbuds, especially if you’re already deep in Apple’s ecosystem.

I don’t expect this price to stick around once Amazon Prime Day wraps up, so if you’ve been waiting for a proper AirPods Pro 3 discount, this is the deal to jump on.

Quick links to the best Apple deals on AmazonEven more AirPod deals

The AirPods 4 are a tempting buy if you want Apple’s latest open-fit earbuds without stepping up to the ANC model. Our AirPods 4 review found they sounded good and offered a secure, comfortable fit despite the lack of in-ear tips.View Deal

This is a solid drop on the AirPods 4 model to buy if you want noise cancellation without silicone ear tips. Our AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation review found their sound quality impressively close to the AirPods Pro 2, though the open fit still won’t isolate noise as fully as in-ear buds with a proper seal.View Deal

It's hard to find Apple's over-ear cans with much of a discount, so this is worth checking if you're keen on a new set of premium AirPods. The AirPods Max remain expensive, but our Apple AirPods Max review praised their excellent ANC and superb audio performance.View Deal

I can't get Netflix to run smoothly in my house — but NASA just sent a 4K video stream from the Moon, thanks to AWS - Wednesday, July 8, 2026 - 20:20
  • 25 million viewers watch the first-ever 4K livestream beamed from the Moon
  • 260Mbps transfer speeds send video more than 250,000 miles
  • AWS GovCloud has an important role in NASA simulations

Amazon Web Services – the biggest cloud hyperscaler with a market share equaling the combined share of both Microsoft and Google – just helped to enable the first-ever like 4K video stream from the Moon.

The company transmitted video footage from the Orion spacecraft by laser, with an estimated 25 million people watching the coverage across NASA+, YouTube and Amazon’s own Prime Video platform.

Not only is this the first time 4K video has ever been transmitted from the Moon to Earth, but it’s also major news for video transmission by laser optics instead of conventional radio.

AWS enabled 260Mbps transfer speeds via laser

Key to supporting the video transmission was NASA’s Orion Artemis II Optical Communications System (O2O) – a laser-based terminal more than 20 years in the making that supports up to 260Mbps transfer speeds. In other words, fast enough for real-time 4K video and other crucial mission data.

Generally, streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video would recommend having internet speeds of 15-20Mbps to stream 4K video. With NASA and AWS opening up 260Mbps, more than enough buffer was available to continue transmitting other key telemetry, voice communications, mission data and other files.

Unlike traditional radio systems, optical communications promise much higher bandwidth and are better suited to transmitting much larger datasets, thus they are expected to become increasingly important as space exploration pushes new boundaries.

In this case, laser transmissions were received by Mount Stromlo Observatory near Canberra, Australia, and NASA’s White Sands Complex in New Mexico was responsible for processing and distributing signals. “AWS, NASA, and ANU partnered and stood up the connection in a matter of weeks, for the cost of a laptop,” the company declared.

All in, the video was transmitted an estimated quarter of a million miles, “connecting viewers to the farthest humans ever to travel from Earth.”

But Amazon’s partnership with NASA runs even deeper than this, with the company hosting the official NASA+ streaming platform using AWS Elemental services.

Amazon plays a crucial role in NASA’s trajectory

Besides video, Amazon’s cloud infrastructure also proves instrumental to other core NASA operations. Its flight sciences team at the Johnson Space Center runs tens of thousands of trajectory simulations for every launch opportunity, producing as much as 2-5TB of data per launch window.

Amazon proudly proclaimed that these simulations run on AWS GovCloud (US), enabling maximum security for sensitive data. Using a technique known as cloud bursting, NASA is able to “scale into hundreds of additional Intel-based cloud instances on demand,” allowing it to retarget and optimize trajectory in near real-time.

Mission control aside, Amazon’s huge video streaming success lays out the framework for future space missions, including the upcoming Artemis IV lunar landing which NASA hopes to get into the hands of 250 million live viewers.

'Still the king of bright room OLED TV': I tested Samsung and LG's latest flagship OLED TVS side-by-side to see is better for bright rooms — here's the one I'd pick - Wednesday, July 8, 2026 - 21:00

The Samsung S95F was our pick for the best OLED TV for bright rooms in 2025, thanks to its anti-glare matte screen that eliminates reflections, and its high brightness. These combined to make even dark movies viewable in really bright rooms on it: something most other OLED TVs just couldn’t achieve — even the S95F’s rival, the LG G5.

It remained the king until the LG G6 arrived this year. While the G6 still shows some mirror-like reflections when the screen is turned off, the brightness of these reflections is toned so far back that they don't really distract any more when you're viewing something.

You can now watch movies — even the super-dark The Batman — in Filmmaker Mode in bright conditions without distraction, but with the deep black tones OLED is famed for retained. When I compared the G6 with the S95F, I actually picked the G6 as the new king of bright-room OLEDs.

Fast forward a few months and the Samsung S99H (known as the S95H in the US — it's the same TV with a different name) has arrived in our testing lab. It has the latest version of Samsung's anti-reflection matte layer, so can it reclaim the crown as the best option for bright-room viewing? I've already compared the S95H/S99H with the G6 where I focused on other picture quality elements such as dark-room viewing and colors, and they came out basically even. So let's see how they compare in bright conditions.

Out-and-out reflections

While the G6 (right) does a great job of reducing reflections, the S95H/S99H (left) is best at completely eliminating their shapes thanks to its anti-glare screen. You're seeing a square overhead light reflected in both panels here (Image credit: Future)

The first area I decided to test was both TVs' reflection handling capabilities. This meant which TV was the outright most effective at eliminating mirror-like reflections caused by lights and objects.

Using the overhead lights in our testing lab, after getting the right angle, it was pretty clear the S95H/S99H was the superior model. Looking at the screen, the light from the overhead light is reduced to haze and the actual shape of the light is illegible: perfect if you’ve got pesky lights or windows in your bright room that you can’t hide, and that your eye is drawn to involuntarily focus on.

On the G6, the shape of the light, and the light itself, was still legible. It was certainly an improvement over its predecessor, the LG G5, as the latter had a pretty reflective screen — but there was no doubt that the overhead light was still visible.

Even looking at the shut-off, blank screen, you could see objects, such as other TVs we store in the same room, on the screen of the G6. The S95H/S99H on the other hand had absolutely nothing on screen, other than the haze of light from overhead. So for pure reflection-killing, the S95H/S99H is best.

Black level performance

In Filmmaker Mode, the G6 (right) does a better job showing shadow detail with a clearer picture overall in a bright room compared to the S95H/S99H (left) (Image credit: Warner Bros / Future )

Watching a movie is a more complicated story, however. With both TVs set to Filmmaker Mode, and watching the dark-tone torture test that is The Batman, the G6 did a better job maintaining black levels and delivering more impactful contrast than the S95H/S99H.

In a scene where Batman stands in a dark subway platform, having just defeated a gang of thugs, the first thing that was apparent was the S95H/S99H’s Filmmaker Mode was very dim compared to the G6. Due to the low perceived brightness and the raised black tones of the mate screen, large parts of the scene were illegible, with Batman himself partly obscured in black and the detail in the walls at the back of the platform not as clear as they were on the G6. The G6 also has better shadow detail, with more of Batman’s suit and the creases in the thug’s black jackets more legible too.

Switching to Alien: Romulus, it was the same story. As the crew approached the Nostromo, the blackness of space was much inkier and deeper on the G6. The S95H/S99H had a hazy gray sheen over it from the matte screen, which affected the integrity of the black tones. It also meant the rings around the moon didn’t have quite as much punch as the G6.

With both TVs set to Filmmaker Mode, the G6 (right) shows much deeper black tones in this shot of Alien: Romulus (Image credit: 20th Century Studios / Future )

I found it odd that there was such a perceived brightness difference between the two as when I measured their brightness, the gap wasn’t as big as the real-world viewing suggested. The S95H/S99H clocked in at 2,739 nits of peak HDR brightness (10% window) in Filmmaker Mode, while the G6 clocked in at 3,004 nits. While 250 nits is nothing to sniff at, the pictures on screen suggested a bigger gap.

In fact, fullscreen HDR brightness was about as close as it gets. In the same HDR Filmmaker Mode, the S95H/S99H hit a measured fullscreen brightness of 449 nits, while the G6 hit 451. The human eye can’t perceive that little difference, yet in person, the G6 had the more complete picture.

In fact, watching in a darker room, the S95H/S99H delivers a richer, stronger picture. The same subway scene from The Batman shows deeper blacks and looks more accurate to the movie’s gloomy tone. On the G6, I found that its brightness hampered it slightly. While it did demonstrate good shadow detail, its brightness affected the quality of the darker tones on screen, and the image just wasn’t as satisfying as on the S95H/S99H.

In fairness to both TVs, some settings tweaks can solve some of the issues above. On the G6, dropping contrast from 50 to 49 takes away some of that over-brightness, while switching Tone Mapping from the default Static to Active on the S95H/S99H in Filmmaker Mode adds some brightness, although the image doesn’t feel as accurate then. But for these tests, I kept both TVs in their default settings.

The better TV for bright rooms

Honestly, both these TVs are fantastic for bright-room viewing. They both do a great job of eliminating reflections and delivering excellent picture quality despite being in a bright room. OLED’s nemesis has always been bright rooms and reflections, and it’s great to have two TVs that can handle the light. You can’t go wrong with either of these TVs for bright rooms and they’re both excellent OLED TVs.

If you have a bright room, either of these TVs would work. Your choice may depend on your circumstances. If you know you'll be watching a lot with light flooding in during the day, the S95H/S99H is the better option for keeping reflections to an absolute minimum. If you can control the light in your room more, the G6 is probably the better option.

For me, if I had to pick one TV for bright-room viewing, I’d go for the G6. While the S95H/S99H is seriously good at dealing with pesky reflections, and is an improvement over the superb S95F, I favored the G6’s richer black tones in brighter rooms.

Although the G6 isn’t as complete at removing mirror-like reflections, so there are some present in darker scenes, it’s effective enough to make watching darker movies in a bright room feel less like a chore than it did on its predecessor, the G5 — but with the contrasty feeling you want from an OLED TV.

There's always a trade-off with choosing a bright-room TV of reflection reduction versus preserving the image accuracy. Last year, the balance fell in favor of Samsung's matte display. This year, the G6’s better black level performance combined with drastically lowering the impact of mirror-like reflections is enough to make it my pick for bright rooms — but the Samsung S95H/S99H is a brilliant TV for light rooms still.

Peaky Blinders sequel: cast, plot, and everything else we know about Netflix's untitled follow-up series - Wednesday, July 8, 2026 - 22:00
Peaky Blinders sequel series: key information

- No title has been announced for the sequel series
- No confirmed release date
- No trailer yet
- We know that it will be split into two new six-episode seasons
- Jamie Bell, Conleth Hill, and Charlie Heaton are among the confirmed cast members

The following guide may contain spoilers for the main Peaky Blinders series and the movie The Immortal Man.

Peaky Blinders will return to Netflix for a new sequel series, but so far little is known about the next installment.

That doesn't mean there's nothing to be excited about, though. In June 2026, Tudum confirmed that some huge names were joining the cast, so I'm sure it will be just as impressive as the original Peaky Blinders series and its follow-up movie, The Immortal Man, the latter of which received a 90% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, our entertainment writer Jasmine Valentine noted that The Immortal Man's ending might pose some problems when it comes to the new sequel series. We'll get into that later on.

Here's everything we know about the Peaky Blinders sequel series so far.

Peaky Blinders sequel: release date

We don't have a release date for the Peaky Blinders sequel series just yet, but we do know it will consist of two new six-episode seasons.

The Peaky Blinders sequel will follow the original series and the feature-length film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, that’s streaming now on Netflix. So you can watch these while you wait for the new episodes, if you like.

Speaking of the show's return, creator Steven Knight told Tudum: “Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel, and it will be a hell of a ride.”

Peaky Blinders sequel trailer: is there one?

Currently, there is no trailer available for the Peaky Blinders sequel series as it is still in development. Once one becomes available, I'll add it here.

Peaky Blinders sequel: cast

Much of the excitement around the Peaky Blinders sequel so far has come from the recent casting announcements. Despite not having a release date, trailer, or name, we do know that some major stars are joining the line-up.

Half Man's Jamie Bell and Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton will star as Duke and Charles Shelby, two half-brothers and the sons of the now deceased Tommy Shelby. Charles severed all ties to the Peaky Blinders gang, but something tells me he won't be able to get out completely.

Elsewhere, Conleth Hill joins as Clemmy Keeler, the fierce patriarch of the rival Keeler family. Cal O’Driscoll plays Clemmy’s son, Aidan Keeler, and Daniel Monks plays Detective Inspector Bell.

This great selection of stars joins previously announced cast members Jessica Brown Findlay, Lashana Lynch, and Lucy Karczewski.

Peaky Blinders sequel: plot details

Peaky Blinders' sequel series is set a decade after World War II, and follows the race to rebuild Birmingham. Duke Shelby is at the heart of what has been described as "a brutal contest of mythical dimensions."

We can expect new opportunities, jeopardy, and ambitions when Peaky Blinders returns, even though we won't be focusing on the series' icon, Tommy Shelby, anymore. I'm excited already.
