Dyson just made the robot vacuum I've been crying out for — and it's not the new flagship - Tuesday, September 29, 2026 - 06:23

Traditionally, Dyson has been a one-robovac-at-a-time kind of brand. At its most recent launch event, though, we were treated to three new bots at once. And the one I'm most interested in is the R1, which sits right at the bottom of the lineup.

The R1 is the least flashy of the bunch. It doesn't have the grime-illuminating UV light of the R3, nor the mildly baffling triangular-ish mop pads of the R2. In fact, it doesn't have mop pads at all. The Dyson R1 — or the Dyson R1 Nurovi Dry, to give it its full name, is a vacuum-only model, and in many ways it's the robovac I think has been missing from the market.

Bigger but not better

Over the past few years, robot vacuums have been getting more complicated, bulkier (especially in the case of the docks), and more expensive. A lot of that is tied to the mopping functions. Docks have become giant all-in-one clean stations that top up the bot's water tank, wash its mop pads with hot water, and dry them with hot air.

The robots themselves increasingly have roller mops — which makes them taller than they'd need to be than with the now-out-of-fashion flat pads. Some of the incoming flagships even have the mechanics to produce steam.

In contrast, remove the wet cleaning functionality and the whole system can be streamlined considerably. The dock doesn't need to hold two giant water tanks, or all the mechanics involved in producing heat. The bot can be truly specialized for vacuuming, without having to worry about tanks and rollers and how you get the wet bits out of the way when they're not wanted.

Most high-end robovacs — the R3 included — are jam-packed with wet cleaning functions (Image credit: Future)

And yet, in recent years, it's become really quite tricky to find a good robot vacuum that doesn't have all the mopping extras built in. In fact, "vacuum-only premium models" was one of the overdue robot vacuum innovations one of TechRadar's main reviewers bemoaned at the close of 2024. It's a gap that has continued to bug me as we near the end of 2026.

Rug danger

The Dyson R1 Nurovi Dry does away with the mopping — and all the paraphernalia that comes with it — in favor of keeping things simple, and focusing on vacuuming. I spoke with Nathan Lawson McLean, a Dyson senior design manager who works across the brand's home products, at the Nurovi launch, to get his insights on the new additions.

"We are super aware that when we look across the robotic market, you've got really different needs," he tells me. "You've got some people that are super familiar with robots. They want wet and dry. They want self-cleaning machines. They want rollers because they deep clean every single day."

The R1 (left) has no mopping function, and instead focuses entirely on vacuuming (Image credit: Future)

However, that's not true for all people or all households. "[Some people] simply don't need it because mopping is not part of their routine," Lawson McLean continues. "They want something that's small, effective, the right price point, and sympathetic to their home. And maybe not a great, big, bloody dock like you might see some robot vacs have."

There's also, he concedes, some trepidation around automated mopping in general. "There are many people who — I know for a fact, through user trials — don't trust robotic vacuums [with mops] with their carpets," he adds. The R1 is a great solution for those customers. "[It can] perhaps even be a bit of an entry gateway to robotic vacuums, converting those people that don't really see the value of wet and dry robots just yet."

Suction master

Earlier, I described the Dyson R1 Nurovi as 'simple', but I don't mean it's basic. Although I can't vouch for the real-life performance until we've tested one out, the specs and features look solid. 21,000Pa of suction is very respectable, there's an extending side sweeper, and an anti-tangle brush bar.

There are even a couple of features that elevate it from the competition. Dyson has built in a Piezo sensor that monitors dust levels and adjusts suction power in response (presumably similar to the setup in its stick vacuums such as the Gen5detect, which I have tried and was impressed by).

I am also intrigued by the 'Twin-capture system' — essentially a semi-sealed off suction area at the top of the suction inlet, designed to create (as Lawson McLean describes it) "a highly concentrated and efficient airflow path that's sealed down to the floor". This section will lift ultra-fine particles, while the more open main roller area can handle chunkier crumbs and debris.

Two separate suction inlets help ensure no particle — large or small — gets missed (Image credit: Future)

Rather unusually in the robot vacuum market, it doesn't use dust bags, so that's one fewer thing you'll need to remember to buy. The one thing I was initially disappointed about is the fact that Dyson hasn't used some of the dock space freed up by removing the mopping parts to supersize the dustbin. The R1 has the same dust capacity as the R2 — it's just missing the second and third 'pillars', where the water tanks live.

However, Lawson McLean is adamant that this column will provide ample space for the vast majority of people. Officially, it's meant to last 100 days, but his view is that only the owners of especially hairy pets will need to empty it that often. "From the early prototypes we started testing in the beginning of the year, I don't think I've emptied it once. It might be a bit disgusting, but it's still filling up."

It might not be especially flashy, but the R1 Nurovi checks a lot of boxes that many big robovac brands have been neglecting lately, and I think it could be the bot the market has been crying out for.

Vivo's new 400mm teleconverter lens shows rivals Oppo and Apple how it's done - Tuesday, September 29, 2026 - 06:37
  • Vivo announced a new G2 Ultra 4.7x teleconverter lens alongside its flagship X500 series of phones
  • The lens comes in the X500 Pro Max photographer's kit, or it can be purchased separately. It's compatible with all three X500 phones
  • The phones and accessories are China-only for now, with a wider rollout TBD

My first time was… OK, but my second was a revelation. Behave, I'm talking about taking photos with a smartphone and teleconverter, of course, and Vivo has shown Oppo, Honor, and everyone else, in fact — including Apple — how it’s done.

Available separately (in China only) or in the Vivo X500 Pro Max photographer’s kit (much like the previous X300 Ultra-compatible model), there are now two teleconverter lenses that extend the phone’s reach: a 2.3x and a new ‘G2 Ultra’ 4.7x.

Like the Oppo Find X9 Ultra and its teleconverter lens, they are designed to be paired with the phone’s telephoto camera, but in this case, it’s a 3.5x lens with an 85mm effective focal length. Add the ‘G2 Ultra’ 4.7x teleconverter — which is a proper bit of gear with Zeiss optics — and you therefore have a 400mm lens, no digital zoom required.

What particularly impressed me on the Vivo X500 Pro Max is how its teleconverter is implemented within the phone's camera app. You check the teleconverter option in the camera menu, after which an icon always appears on the screen.

If you want to use the teleconverter, tap the teleconverter icon, follow the prompt to select which teleconverter is attached, and the phone corrects the image for use with the phone (the teleconverter uses mirrors, so the image would otherwise be upside down).

Tim Coleman Tim Coleman Tim Coleman

The Oppo phone, on the other hand, requires a dedicated teleconverter mode to optimize the image. This mode is severely simple and restricted, and therefore you cannot use it with the phone’s best camera features. The same can be said for new Honor Magic 9 Pro Max and the latest iPhone 18 devices paired with third-party options such as PGY Tech and its associated app (as demonstrated by @byteddyk).

Meanwhile, the Vivo X500 Pro Max doesn’t require a dedicated mode — it can be used with any of the other modes, with no real restriction in place, making the teleconverter inherently more useful.

Working with any shooting mode and the 3.5x telephoto camera means that users can access the phone’s maximum 200MP resolution. You can select the Pro mode with RAW file format and full control over exposure, too.

Or how about SnapShot — a mode designed for action photography that automatically uses a high shutter speed, which you likely want to use at such a magnified 400mm focal length for wildlife and sports photos.

Oppo’s teleconverter mode can do none of those things, and it’s real case use is fairly limited, as I discovered when attempting to photograph a pro Champions League soccer match from my distant seat in the stadium.

The Oppo phone without teleconverter — it has a 3.5x telephoto camera, plus a 10x (digital zoom) setting that gets decent resultsTim Coleman The 4.7x teleconverter, however, gets more reach and sharp resultsTim Coleman Tim Coleman Tim Coleman Tim Coleman Tim Coleman

The cherry on the X500 Pro Max and teleconverter cake is that the lens is supported by decent image stabilization, though you're not getting the 7EV in-body image stabilization like with the phone's main camera.

The lens comes with a collar and tripod mount, making it easy to attach to a tripod. It's best to use one, but I found that I could still shoot sharp images, smooth video, and track subjects handheld at 400mm.

It's also possible to extend the 400mm reach digitally, with 800mm, 1200mm, 1600mm, and 3200mm options, but I find that using the digital zoom with a Vivo phone makes for artificial-looking photos (when pixel peeping, at least. A better option is to up the resolution from the standard 12MP to 50MP or 200MP and then crop in. Check the gallery below to see how much you can crop in from a 200MP file.

Detail feels much more natural in the higher-resolution setting.Tim Coleman

I still have the Oppo Find X9 Ultra and its teleconverter, but I couldn’t ever get past the limitations of using it. The Vivo, on the other hand, will be the setup I reach for next time I want to grab super-telephoto shots with a phone.

For now, sadly, the Vivo X500 series and accessories are only available in China, with a wider rollout TBD, though these flagship Vivo devices have not sold directly in the US or UK before.

Still, the G2 Ultra 4.7x teleconverter is a real showcase of what smartphone cameras can be capable of — hopefully, one day, they will be more widely available.

Italy's top bank hit by an AI messaging scam which cost it nearly €100 million - Tuesday, September 29, 2026 - 09:03
  • AI-powered deepfakes convinced executives to authorize massive overseas fund transfers
  • Fraudsters impersonated senior figures through messaging apps and cloned voices
  • Incident highlights evolving business email compromise tactics in the AI era

Cybercriminals have tricked a major Italian bank into wiring more than $100 million abroad by targeting executives with AI-powered deepfakes. Some of the money has since been recovered, but a significant portion remains unaccounted for.

The target was Fideuram – Intesa Sanpaolo Private Banking, a very large Italian private-banking and wealth-management group owned by Intesa Sanpaolo. It cannot be considered a “normal” retail bank - its core business is managing investments and wealth for affluent and high-net-worth clients.

According to the latest figures, the bank has around $513.25 billion in assets under management (AUM), more than 7,100 private bankers, and more than $9.85 billion in net profit.

Deepfakes and phone calls

Citing two sources familiar with the matter, Reuters reported that the attack took place in February 2026, while the chairman was Paolo Molesini.

Molesini reportedly received a WhatsApp message that seems to have come from Carlo Messina, Intesa Sanpaolo Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who asked him to help with an urgent overseas transaction, to which the victim agreed. He was later contacted by someone claiming to be senior partner at a prominent law firm, to confirm the instruction. This person used AI tools to create a deepfake of the lawyer’s voice, tricking Molesini into thinking the request was authentic.

The chairman then reached out to the bank’s finance department, arranging a series of transactions to foreign account, the majority of which were in mainland China and Hong Kong.

The scam was spotted soon afterwards, and Fideuram moved to block the transaction. With the help of law enforcement in China, Portugal, and Italy, around $60.14 million was recovered. Around $40.8 million remains missing, apparently converted into cryptocurrencies.

Ruining a person's career

Paolo Molesini announced he was stepping down from roles of president for both Fideuram itself and Intesa Sanpaolo Private Banking a month later, in March 2026, citing “personal reasons”.

According to Reuters, neither Molesini, or any other Fideuram executives are under investigation, but local authorities are apparently investigating a “foreign national living outside Europe” for potential fraud.

In the pre-AI era, this type of fraud was known as Business Email Compromise (BEC). Crooks would break in (or otherwise spoof) the email address of a company’s CEO (or other executive), map out employees working in the finance department, and reach out with instructions for wire transfers. These instructions would explain that the transfer needs to be completed in secrecy, to avoid unnecessary publicity or competitors.

Nowadays, with the advent of artificial intelligence and the ease with which crooks can create deepfake images, voice clones, and even videos, BEC attacks have spread out to instant messaging platforms, voice calls, and even video calls.

Last year, scammers used artificial intelligence to create a deepfake of the voice of an Italian minister, tricking local businessman Massimo Moratti to transfer around $1.13 million to an overseas account. The money was later successfully recovered, it was said.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered adds a neat Bard's Ballad preset designed to 'streamline gameplay' by offering a ton of custom options you would normally need mods for, and I'm eager to try it out - Tuesday, September 29, 2026 - 09:10
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered's patch notes have been released
  • The update will offer all-new animations and an improved skill system
  • A new accessibility preset called Bard's Ballad also offers a more tailored gameplay experience

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered is officially here, and CD Projekt Red has released the long list of improvements that promise an entirely new experience for the decade-old role-playing game (RPG).

The patch notes detail a ton of upgrades, from better visuals, transmogrification, an expanded photo mode, updated textures, PS5 Pro support, and more. Some pretty impressive animation improvements that are sure to make my new playthrough feel even more immersive have also been added. Geralt's animations during combat, idling, and riding Roach have all been refined; new finishers have also been added, and ladder climbing, jumping, and vaulting are now "more responsive" and "fluid."

The skill system has also been completely rebalanced, and " Skills are now organized into a skill tree, and each skill has three ranks," while others have been renamed to better reflect their effects, and I can't wait to try out new builds.

One of the most notable additions to the remaster, included in the accessibility features, is the Bard's Ballad preset, which can be enabled when starting a new game on "Just the Story" difficulty or mid-game.

"It is designed to reduce cognitive load for players who experience mental fatigue or have difficulty concentrating," CDPR explained. "It streamlines gameplay by simplifying certain mechanics and disabling select features for a smoother, more focused adventure."

On top of that, players can customize the preset by enabling or disabling some options that I've always wanted and would normally need mods for. Those options include Vitality Regeneration Boost, Infinite Breath, Unlimited Item Durability, Unlimited Boat Durability, Faster Boats, Toggle Witcher Sense, and probably my favorite out of the bunch, Ignore Item Weight.

I typically play on normal or higher difficulties in The Witcher 3, but for my latest playthrough I'm quite eager to try out the Bard's Ballad preset for the added customization that comes with it.

There are plenty more quality-of-life, modding, UI/UX, gameplay, and visual improvements to discover in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered, which is now available and is free for current owners of the game. Players who also own only the base game can claim the two included expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, at no extra cost.
