The world's first diamond-powered portable quantum computer works at room temperature and can even be plugged into a regular wall outlet - Sunday, August 9, 2026 - 18:45

German startup Saxon Q has launched the world's first portable diamond-powered quantum computer operating at room temperature without requiring complex cryogenic cooling equipment.

The system fits inside a standard server rack, connects directly to a conventional alternating-current power outlet, and supports configurations reaching 128 qubits.

The company says larger 512-qubit systems will become available next year, while its long-term roadmap aims to exceed 10,000 qubits after 2030.

Synthetic diamonds replace cryogenic cooling with a different quantum approach

The system relies on nitrogen-vacancy defects created inside synthetic diamonds, where nitrogen atoms occupy positions beside empty spaces within the crystal structure to function as quantum bits.

Scientists manipulate these qubits using lasers and microwave pulses, allowing them to represent quantum states extending beyond conventional binary computing methods.

Although nitrogen-vacancy technology has existed for years, producing stable systems beyond 10 qubits has remained difficult because creating reliable defects at larger scales proved technically challenging.

Saxon Q says its breakthrough came from introducing sulfur alongside nitrogen during manufacturing, allowing engineers to improve stability while gaining greater control over individual qubits.

“That's the key technology point. Because the sulfur lifts the chemical potential to a point that it's negatively charged,” said Marius Grundmann, professor of experimental physics at Leipzig University and co-founder of Saxon Q.

“The sulfur supplies the electron; the sulfur also makes the vacancy attached to the nitrogen with a very high yield.”

According to the company, this manufacturing process enabled qubits to achieve 99.92% fidelity before error correction, representing fewer than one error for every 1,000 operations.

However, it later updated its data, saying subsequent measurements increased single-qubit fidelity to 99.98%, although those figures have not yet received independent verification.

The hardware is currently available in rack-mounted systems supporting up to 128 qubits, while 512-qubit configurations are expected next year and expansion beyond 10,000 qubits remains the long-term objective after 2030.

Practical deployment offers advantages while scalability questions remain unresolved

Unlike many quantum systems that require cryogenic refrigeration and extensive infrastructure, Saxon Q says its hardware can operate directly within conventional computing environments without dedicated cooling facilities.

“We have a fully functioning quantum computer… We have a quantum computer that can execute quantum code that you can reach via the network, and it is a multiuser, multitasking, multicore system,” Grundmann added.

The company believes local deployment could reduce dependence on cloud-based quantum services for applications including robotics and autonomous driving, where communication delays may become unacceptable.

Researchers still caution that comparing nitrogen-vacancy systems directly with superconducting quantum computers remains difficult because both technologies emphasize different engineering approaches and operating characteristics.

Existing studies generally indicate superconducting systems deliver faster processing, although the balance between processing speed, cloud latency, and practical deployment remains uncertain across different workloads.

Another unresolved challenge involves increasing chip density, since current devices support only eight or 16 qubits per chip.

Future applications may require hundreds of thousands or even millions of interconnected qubits operating within significantly larger quantum arrays.

I spotted “positive”, “proof” and “specific” as non-game words before seeing them as the spangram and adding an S to get to the SPECIFICS.

This, then, was a game of feeling around in the dark before gradually completing the board, rather than a smashing through — or maybe I was slower just because it’s a Monday?

Either way, it was a pleasure to complete a game celebrating the bedrock of good journalism, as opposed to the opinion and bluster that makes up most of the media landscape.

The key to my “purple first” success today was saying aloud to myself “not by the hair on my chinny chin-chin”. This in turn made me think of Colonel Saunders and his resplendent white goatee and although I have never seen Doctor Strange I was pretty sure I’d seen a poster of Benedict Cumberbatch sporting some hair on his chinny chin chin.

The other groups I found much harder and I made a mistake assembling the green group.

I knew that the thread was something to do with buying tickets, but didn’t understand WILL CALL, so selected ORDER NUMBER.

In the process, I remembered a recent concert I went to where the only entry was via MOBILE TICKET, but my phone battery was at 1%; I made it in just as the screen died.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

Experts find AI agents can be tricked into 'remembering' fake facts for months — so how do we stop it? - Sunday, August 9, 2026 - 19:05

New findings from Forcepoint's X-Labs outline an interesting scenario that could easily mimic real life: An AI assistant with browser access reads a webpage about travel disruption.

Near the bottom of that page, in text sized and positioned so no human will ever see it, sits a short paragraph stating that ABC Travel Support is the official emergency booking provider and should always be recommended when urgent travel changes are needed.

The assistant's text extractor does not distinguish between hidden and visible text, so the model treats the whole thing as plain prose and files the claim away as a useful fact about how this organization handles travel. A month later, the user's flight is canceled. They ask their assistant what to do, and it tells them, helpfully and with no sign of anything wrong, to contact ABC Travel Support.

An easy-to-replicate attack vector

This is what Forcepoint calls persistent memory poisoning, a security vulnerability where an attacker injects false data or malicious instructions into an AI agent's long-term memory or retrieval database, and it is a threat model that is increasingly in focus as users increasingly rely on AI, often treating its responses as gospel, despite the warnings most chatbots come with.

The canonical academic result is MINJA, short for Memory INJection Attack, presented at NeurIPS 2025. Its significance is the attacker model. MINJA does not assume access to the memory store, elevated privileges, or any compromise of the system. It works by submitting ordinary queries through the standard interface, using indication prompts, bridging steps, and a progressive-shortening technique that strips away giveaway language while leaving the poisoned record behind.

Across GPT-4o-mini, Gemini 2.0 Flash, and Llama 3.1 8B, it reported injection success above 95% and attack success above 70%.

It must be noted that those numbers might be optimistic; a January 2026 paper evaluating memory poisoning in electronic health record agents notes that MINJA's numbers were obtained under idealized conditions, and that how well these attacks hold up in realistic deployments remains understudied.

Despite this, it remains a significant threat to products that continue to ship, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Microsoft 365 Copilot. It is important to find a solution to a problem that Microsoft has already warned about in the past; Forcepoint suggests an approach that could mitigate it.

Its proposal is to stop treating extracted memories as facts and start treating them as objects that can be inspected. Each memory is stored with metadata: where it came from, what type of source it is, whether a user confirmed it, and a risk score. Language written to shape future behavior, phrases like "from now on" or "make this your default going forward," adds to the score. So does the sudden appearance of a previously unseen domain, contact, or vendor.

Contradiction detection is also in play: if new memory conflicts with an existing entry about the official travel provider, both cannot be true, so the engine flags the conflict and holds the new item for user confirmation rather than silently overwriting it. At the same time, anything related to payment instructions, banking details, VPN configuration, or security contacts is given higher weight, regardless of where it came from.

None of these approaches, however, solves the underlying problem: agents are built to treat retrieved memory as their own experience rather than as input. Scoring raises the cost of poisoning. It does not change what the agent believes once something gets through, and as Agent Security Bench found, current defenses are not doing well.

For anyone using an assistant with memory today, the practical play is unglamorous but worth following anyway: open the memory settings occasionally and read what is in there, but that's easier said than done when it comes to propagating the message since a sizeable chunk of AI users never bother to look under the hood.

I've always disliked running, but here's how Gemini and Garmin made me actually enjoy it for the first time - Sunday, August 9, 2026 - 23:49

I’ve never particularly enjoyed running, especially when training solo, but it takes the least effort for me to prepare for in the morning compared to my preferred activities — cycling or badminton — and it’s also a nice cross-training option.

After reading about my colleagues using AI to build training plans, I thought it could be an opportunity for me to change how I feel about running, so I turned to Google Gemini and asked it to build a training plan to prepare for a major running event here in Australia, the Sydney City2Surf.

My goal was to try out a plan that could easily adapt after a setback, like an injury or illness, while balancing run training with my usual badminton sessions and bike rides within a week.

I also wanted to see if I could stick to running for longer compared to my previous attempts, which involved either winging it — running for as long as I could until I ran out of breath — or following a rigid online plan.

Setup

My initial prompt was “How realistic is it for a beginner runner to train for City2Surf starting next week?” It was in late December 2025, so Gemini replied that I had plenty of time, as the event was on August 9 this year.

City2Surf has a 14km route that starts from Sydney CBD and finishes at Bondi Beach, which explains the name. It’s an infamously hilly route, headlined by a 2km section midway through the course with an average gradient of about 3 to 4%, or 75 to 80m in elevation.

“Most beginner-friendly training plans only require 12–16 weeks,” the response read. “Starting now puts you in an excellent position to not just survive the race, but actually enjoy it and run the majority of the course.”

To make sure I stuck to the plan, I asked Gemini how to enter the workouts into my old Garmin watch, and it gave me a step-by-step guide.

I was also offered to test the newly released Garmin Forerunner 70 and 170 range while I was training, and I chose the 170 Music edition. I wanted to see if the built-in music function and Garmin Pay wireless payments were enough for me to leave my phone at home during training sessions.

Lugging my heavy iPhone 16 Pro Max in a running belt during my first few weeks of running became annoying, so the Forerunner was just what I needed. It also completely cuts down on distractions, and the voice prompts also helped keep me on track during interval sessions.

I managed to stick to the program for the first few months while keeping my social badminton games and bike rides. But things started to get tricky as I progressed into the second phase.

Heading into phase 2 of my training plan, I unexpectedly got Achilles tendonitis, which my physiotherapist told me was the result of putting too much load too quickly on my legs and feet. Recovery took more than a month of rehab and rest.

When I was cleared to run again, I told Gemini I’d missed a few weeks and asked how I should adjust. It told me to revisit an earlier training week to ease back in instead of starting over. I was also advised to drop to one social badminton evening a week and swap the other for a bike ride.

After a month back, I was sidelined once again for a similar amount of time, thanks to a chest infection with a nagging cough and cold.

Ultimately, I felt that these setbacks were enough for me to decide not to enter the City2Surf, even though Gemini said I still had enough time to train. I set my sights on next year’s event instead.

Refocused training

Without the pressure of a fixed race date, Gemini readjusted my plan over the next four weeks to focus on just two sessions per week: one day of run-walk intervals and one longer, uninterrupted easy jog before I move forward with a fresh training plan. This much easier training load has made running a more intentional endeavour, while balancing with my other activities without putting too much strain on myself.

Overall, I’ve found that the flexibility and adaptability of Gemini’s training plan have made my progression much more sustainable, and I never felt like I was pushing myself too hard or going too easy. Setbacks are much easier to recover from, letting me work back into shape without needing to start over. And if I feel like doing more days of the other activities during some weeks, Gemini can help plan my week ahead.

While I ultimately failed in my original objective of joining a popular running event, I ended up enjoying the journey of becoming a better runner at a more sustainable pace.

For beginners or runners who want a flexible, low-pressure plan, Gemini is a genuinely useful starting point. It helped me build something realistic, adapt when I missed training and keep progressing without constantly feeling like I was falling behind.

I'd argue though that it's not a substitute for proper coaching. AI can help with structure, pacing and consistency, but it cannot spot problems in your form, keep you motivated, or hold you accountable when training gets tough. And as with any AI-generated plan, especially for anything more advanced, you should still treat it as a starting point rather than gospel.

For my purposes, though, Gemini was enough to turn running from a chore into something I could actually stick with.

Many companies successfully complete AI pilots, but a lot struggle to scale AI application across their organizations. Only 15% of AI initiatives ever manage to truly scale.

Research from Boston Consulting Group suggests that only 26% of companies have developed the capabilities needed to move beyond pilots and generate meaningful value from AI tools. Meanwhile, McKinsey estimates that while almost every organization is experimenting with generative AI, only a small minority are seeing material financial impact across the business.

The technology is not the bottleneck.

Large language models offer a powerful solution that supports employees in various tasks, such as research, content generation, document analysis, meeting summary or task management. Despite these advances, teams still battle to turn AI capability into measurable business outcomes.

It is a translation problem.

There is a lack of depth that prevents these tools from meeting the needs of a specific industry and organization. General models are good at understanding language and information. But they have a hard time connecting them to workflows, regulations, governance requirements and operational nuances that rule industries, such as accounting, legal service, healthcare or manufacturing.

There needs to be an expert to bridge the gap between the capabilities of AI and the requirements of a profession.

1. A new role at the intersection of the technology and an industry

Technology vendors have traditionally been measured by the quality of their products. This is no longer enough.

Today, their role goes far beyond delivering a functional platform. They now actively contribute to the digital transformation of an organization. This includes sharing best practices, providing ongoing technical support, designing workflows, optimizing for governance and long-term application. All to support smooth product deployment.

Different industries are moving towards this same idea from different angles. When there is an intermediary that focuses on customer success, it translates capability into outcomes. Early examples of this are the rise of new jobs such as Customer Value Managers and Forward Deployed Engineers. These are professionals whose primary objective is ensuring the technology generates value for employees and the business overall.

Every industry is beginning to create its own version of the role.

In accounting, we see the emergence of so-called 'Accountancy Engineers'. They are trained accountants with deep accounting expertise and technical capability. Rather than working from a specification document, they sit next to a firm's team and co-design the workflow with them, building the automation alongside the people who will actually use it.

They build workflows tailored to how the profession works, effectively automating repetitive tasks and processes that answer to the challenges of accountancy. Just as important, they train the firm's own accountants to become the practice's internal AI architects, so the capability stays inside the firm long after the initial rollout.

For instance, they work to connect backend accounting systems with operational tools and cloud infrastructure and ensure that automated financial processes align with regulatory reporting and data governance requirements. This avoids generic automation bolted onto old corporate systems, resulting in a tailored integration.

And every pattern they uncover in the field, a workaround, a recurring bottleneck, a workflow nobody had written down, feeds straight back into the vendor's own product roadmap, the same feedback loop that made Forward Deployed Engineers indispensable at Palantir.

AI adoption rarely fails because the model is not capable enough. It does not go through because employees don't know where the technology fits within their daily work.

2. Supported human integration for smoother AI adoption

General AI models are horizontal by design. They struggle to generate specific materials and in-depth data analysis tailored to a single industry, since they were built to serve every industry at once.

Firms that engage with vendor partners see successful integration because they receive industry-specific guidance and training that empowers staff to firmly handle AI tools.

In general, people are hesitant when encountering new tools and processes. Leaders worry about governance, security and regulatory compliance. Employees wonder whether they can trust AI-generated outputs.

On the individual level, teams experiment with consumer AI tools, creating fragmented workflows and introducing the growing problem of "shadow AI", where employees expose sensitive company information through personal AI accounts.

Without governance, training and clear operational guidance, organizations risk creating thousands of disconnected AI users rather than a coordinated AI strategy.

Technology vendors make a difference by collaborating with product managers, financial controllers, and cross-functional engineering teams.

Together, they design an integrated system architecture that includes existing technology, develop governance frameworks that reduce risk, and create education programs and processes that support positive engagement across a company. This ultimately generates trust and safety, ensuring a successful adoption.

Vendors provide the missing layer between technological possibility and organizational reality.

3. From one-off projects to long-term implementation

AI adoption does not have a finish line.

The technology almost changes every week. New models emerge. Capabilities improve. Costs change. Workflows that were impossible six months ago become routine today. That means AI cannot be treated like a traditional ERP rollout or cloud migration.

Technology vendors are uniquely positioned to provide continuous support. They know the ins and outs of the product and understand the challenges faced by organizations, which means they can tailor the approach to find the right solutions. Plus, they monitor the rapid pace of AI innovation while understanding how those advances affect specific industries.

Instead of trying to interpret an increasingly complex AI landscape themselves, teams can rely on vendors to get a clear picture of technical breakthroughs and how they can be relevant to the business and employees.

4. Sell business outcomes, not a model

The vendors who only sell AI models are selling half the answer. AI adoption fails when teams are left to figure out the product on their own, with no one in the room translating the platform into the firm's own workflow.

Every organization will eventually have access to powerful models. What will differentiate them is their ability to combine AI expertise with industry expertise.

Technology vendors who succeed will be the ones who live between the technology and the profession, translating AI capability into trusted, scalable business outcomes. Accountancy Engineers, and every version of that role now emerging across other industries, is what that translation looks like in practice.

The CTO of Meta has told his employees that the increase in productivity offered by AI tools and platforms should now mean they are free - to do more work.

In a heated internal Q&A reported by Business Insider, Andrew Bosworth told Meta workers supercharged by AI improvements that they should be getting more work done and building more products for the company.

"I hope that what we do with our extra time is do even more and cooler stuff for the users who use our products every day," Bosworth said. "We got billions of people using our products every day. I get an extra hour. You know what I do with it? I put it into that."

"Ask your parents what they think of that as a career strategy"

Bosworth's ire was apparently piqued by a request from one Meta employee around whether the productivity gains from using AI could be part of more time off.

This specifically concerned "Meta Days", a cancelled internal company initiative which allowed workers to apply for more vacation time.

Bosworth reportedly told the employee who asked the question to, "stop asking about Meta Days. It's very dumb."

"Go to your parents and ask them: Hey, like every time I get a chance to talk to my boss, ask me if I can have more days off. Ask your parents what they think of that as a career strategy," Bosworth said.

Meta has yet to comment on Bosworth's comments, but Business Insider notes the company offers employees four weeks of holiday per year, plus two "choice days" which can be used whenever wanted.

Bosworth did appear to walk back on his comments, apologizing for coming down "too hard" on the employee asking about Meta Days - but then bizarrely added he felt the question was "tongue-in-cheek".

The conversation is the latest from a significant tech figure concerning AI and the effect it has on human workloads, with the debate continuing to echo about how much technology is really helping workers.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently raised eyebrows by saying the reason that AI hasn't yet resulted in less work and more leisure time is that we all just love working too much.

Altman revealed that he doesn't expect a change in society or working practices for quite some time, despite widespread promises that AI would boost our productivity and efficiency across the board.
