Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR) has released details about foreign-made parts it says were found inside Russia’s upgraded Iskander-1000 ballistic missile.
The disclosure said American companies, including Xilinx, part of AMD, Atmel, part of Micron Technology, DM&P Electronics, Winbond Electronics, and Analog Devices, supplied critical parts for the missile's guidance and processing systems.
The agency also identified 140 components linked to the missile and said only a limited share came from Russian manufacturers.
Foreign chips remain inside Russia’s upgraded missile systemThe disclosure points to continued foreign technology use in a weapon system developed by Moscow despite efforts to reduce outside dependence.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, 35 companies are connected to the production network supporting Russia’s Iskander-M missile family.
The agency said the updated 9M723-2 variant, also called Iskander-1000, has appeared during recent attacks and forms part of the Bora-M missile system.
The newer missile version reportedly uses a larger engine and modified launcher design, allowing it to reach distances of up to 550km.
This compares with the 390km range attributed by Ukrainian intelligence to the earlier 9M723-1 missile model.
HUR stated that Russia continues to use imported electronic parts in key missile areas despite attempts to replace foreign technology with domestic alternatives.
The agency said only about one-quarter of the identified components were produced by Russian firms.
The intelligence report lists 63 components linked to manufacturers from the United States, while Switzerland and Belarus each account for eight components.
Germany and Taiwan were each linked to four parts, while China supplied three components according to the information released by HUR.
“The most critical components—microprocessors, FPGAs, memory, digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters—come from American and Taiwanese manufacturers…” said Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence.
The missile’s guidance system was described as one of the areas with significant foreign dependence.
HUR claims only five of 43 parts inside a flight information processing unit connected to the missile’s laser gyroscope were Russian-made.
Sanctions face challenges as supply chains remain complexThe identified components include field programmable gate arrays, memory chips, microprocessors and conversion devices used for handling digital and analogue signals.
Such parts are common in many electronic systems, making their movement across global markets difficult to monitor completely.
Ukraine’s intelligence service has called for stronger restrictions against companies, organizations and facilities it believes are linked to Russia’s missile production network.
The agency said international cooperation would be necessary to limit access to important technologies.
However, controlling the movement of advanced electronic components remains difficult because many parts have civilian uses and can pass through several countries before reaching final users.
The presence of international suppliers does not alone establish whether companies directly supply military programs.
The report comes as Ukraine continues efforts to disrupt Russia’s missile operations through sanctions pressure and attacks against launch equipment.
Ukrainian officials have also reported strikes against Russian missile launch platforms before they could be used.
“To counter the aggressor’s plans, it is important to consolidate efforts aimed at restricting Russia’s program for the development, production, and modernization of ballistic weapons,” HUR said.

Lexar has introduced a new docking station for Mac and Windows computers, called the PexarBolt Ultra TBT5 Dock, built around Thunderbolt 5 connectivity.
The dock combines 22 ports with a 5-inch touchscreen and a rotating metal dial to control connected displays and check system status.
The dock's Thunderbolt 5 connection is rated at up to 80 Gbps by default, with a boost mode that pushes that bandwidth to 120 Gbps in one direction.
A desk hub built around high-speed linksAccording to Lexar, the dock can handle two 8K displays at 60Hz or three 4K panels running at 144Hz, depending on host hardware.
Video output comes through Thunderbolt connections alongside DisplayPort 2.1 or HDMI 2.1, although those latter outputs share the same video path.
The unit also accepts Type B CFexpress, SD 4.0 and microSD 4.0 cards, giving camera users several ways to move footage.
An internal M.2 storage slot supports PCIe Gen 4 x2, with advertised transfer rates reaching 3,600 MB/s when suitable hardware is installed.
The storage drive is not included, so buyers would need to supply their own compatible SSD for that internal bay.
Network transfers can use 10GbE, while multiple USB ports provide connections for accessories, drives, phones, tablets and other desk equipment.
On the rear, this device has two slower USB-A ports, two faster USB-A ports, five USB-C sockets, audio, Ethernet, display outputs, and charging.
The front carries the camera card readers, a headphone socket, and two USB-C connections that share their 45W power allocation, though the power delivery reaches 140W for a connected laptop.
Its compatibility covers macOS and Windows, while the dock also works with Thunderbolt and USB4 devices when their supported features allow it.
A screen and cooling add more hardwareThe 5-inch display is intended to show information about connected equipment, power use, temperatures, transfer rates, and other operating details.
A rotary control beside the screen lets users move through interface options, while taps on the display provide access to additional information.
The company says full dashboard functions require its desktop application, making the screen less independent than a simple hardware status panel.
Active cooling combines a fan, metal heat transfer parts and directed airflow, with thermal information also shown through the display.
The package includes the dock, power supply, three regional AC leads, an SSD fitting kit, a Thunderbolt 5 cable and manual.
Lexar has not listed the NVMe drive as part of the package, despite making internal storage expansion one of the dock's main features.
The company is preparing the product for Kickstarter, where the advertised early price is $479 against a regular $649 MSRP.

A new breed of AI-aligned super political action committees (SuperPAC) is spending millions of dollars in an attempt to get pro-AI data center candidates elected in this year’s midterm elections.
Data centers have become a hot political topic with the majority of Americans preferring to have a nuclear reactor in their backyard rather than an AI data center. Americans are also increasingly concerned about AI and its effects on the job market, the environment, and their own health.
But these perspectives just don’t align with AI companies, who have seen unprecedented growth in their model’s capabilities and their stock value. For that growth to continue, perspectives on AI and the infrastructure behind it need to change.
Build data centers or become ‘backwards and poor’There are a few main players behind this movement. Leading The Future (LTF) has become a key funder behind pro-AI and pro-data center candidates, but also says it is using its millions to oppose those opposed to AI - as if the midterms weren’t already confusing enough.
But a new group, Build American AI, has emerged to run pro-AI and pro-data center ads in key battleground states of Kansas, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The Republican party recently issued a call for help from AI firms over AI opposition due to fears it could cost them the Ohio senate race.
If that were to be the case, it could lead to a wider change of floating voters aligning themselves with whoever is opposed to AI data centers.
Even Nvidia is jumping on the PAC train, having recently set up NVPAC to shape policy in its own favor. Nvidia has an enormous stake in AI technologies, given that it commands an enormous share of the hardware used in most AI data centers.
The Trump administration has aligned much of America’s politics around AI. To remain a global power ahead of China, AI cannot be slowed down. To remain on top of America’s battlefields at home and abroad, AI is being integrated into every arm of the military and all aspects of law enforcement. Opposition to AI is therefore opposition to America’s future, or so Trump would want you to believe.
The US economy is currently being buoyed by the surge in growth experienced by AI companies, but the models they are creating have been labelled not only a threat to financial institutions, but also a threat to financial stability of the world.
“The only reason that communities throughout the U.S.A. should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “If they want to be successful and rich, with far lower taxes and jobs all over the place, let Data Reign.”
Trump’s referrals to taxes and jobs raise an interesting point, because numerous states have lost out on billions of tax revenue due to data center exemptions, and numerous studies have shown AI is leading to job losses in multiple industries.
There is also a large amount of infighting within the Republican Party surrounding support for data centers. Many representatives that previously pushed for data center construction - such as Texas Gov. Greg Abbott - have done a 180.
AI could therefore go from a revolutionary technology to one of the most divisive political issues of the Trump administration and beyond.

Unless you're in the safety of your own home, there's always a worry that you're being surveilled without your knowledge — when you're in an Airbnb, hotel room, changing room, or restroom, for example. Now researchers have developed an LED-powered phone accessory to give you some extra peace of mind.
It's called SweepLED, and it's the invention of a team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The portable device combines 15 LED lights, a cable to attach to your phone, and some AI processing.
According to the researchers, SweepLED can spot hidden cameras 94% of the time with a processing period of just five seconds per object. While this is only a prototype for now, the team has tested it on 30 different objects, reporting a high level of skill at identifying where hidden cameras are embedded (or not).
Here's how it works: SweepLED fixes to the back of a phone (over the camera). As video is recorded and the phone stays still, the add-on turns its LEDs on and off, comparing different reflection patterns against each other. Hidden camera lenses show up in those reflection patterns in a way that standard reflective surfaces don't.

"This research is meaningful in that it combines low-cost smartphone-based hardware with AI analysis to present the possibility of a practical detection technology that even non-experts can use."
Previous devices along these lines required users to look for 'bright spots' manually as they were lit up by the detector, the tell-tale sign that there was a camera looking back at them. This should be more efficient, and better at spotting different camera types hidden in a variety of different housings (like clocks or mirrors).
There's still plenty of work to do to get this refined and commercialized, but it shouldn't be expensive: the KAIST team reckons the manufacturing cost of SweepLED would be in the region of $7 (about £5 / AU$10).
If you do a lot of traveling, it might be worth investing in something like this just to make sure you're not being spied on. The work has been presented at the ACM MobiSys 2026 conference and published online, though as yet there's no indication of when it might be available to the masses.

Music company Roland is taking a massive step with its latest project that’s pretty much unprecedented in the world of digital instruments — it's launching a portable piano with built-in Wi-Fi support.
The $750 (roughly £750/ AU$1,149) FP-40 digital piano was unveiled today (September 1), coming in two finishes (black or white) with Bluetooth Audio/ MIDI and USB-C connectivity. Though this isn’t new for digital instruments — many leading piano manufacturers make the most of Bluetooth — Wi-Fi integration is unheard of.
While that’s essentially the selling point, the FP-40 packs a punch with additional features like Roland’s Piano Reality Sound Engine, a technology that augments the finer details and tone of an acoustic piano. As for the keyboard, Roland uses weighted hammer-action keys, on top of the triple-sensor tech it uses to ensure faster responsiveness when playing notes.
Just like your smartphone, tablet, or laptop, the FP-40 piano connects to your home Wi-Fi like any other device, and it will receive regular software updates. But there's a reason why Roland has designed the new sound tool this way — it’s to spotlight its new learning software.

Fire Ant, a China-nexus cyberespionage group, is no longer targeting just virtualization platforms, it’s also going for routers, authentication systems, and Linux management hosts. This is according to cybersecurity researchers Sygnia, who recently saw the group target Cisco IOS XR Routers.
Once they compromise a router, they don’t just use it to move around the network, the researchers explained. Instead, they turn them into full-blown operational platforms, collecting traffic, establishing connections, manipulating command output, and even suppressing logging so that they fly under the defenders’ radars.
For authentication systems, Fire Ant was seen taking aim at TACACS servers. Admins use them to authenticate when accessing network hardware, and crooks use them to harvest valuable credentials and weaken the reliability of audit logs, as well. Finally, Sygnia says Fire Ant also targets Linux management hosts. The researchers saw multiple persistent implants and backdoors, including a custom SSH backdoor and a piece of malware spoofing legitimate software.
Target behind the targetThe goal of the campaign seems to be to establish a foothold that allows crooks to reach other environments. Sygnia describes it as a “target behind the target” scenario:
“This reinforces the “target behind the target” concept introduced earlier in this report. Fire Ant’s interest in the compromised organization should be understood not only as an attempt to compromise a single environment, but as an effort to control infrastructure that may enable visibility, collection, and potential access beyond the immediate victim. The strategic value lies in the trust relationships the organization maintains with connected environments,” Sygnia explained.
Very little is known about Fire Ant, besides the fact that it was first observed in 2025. Some researchers claim it has significant overlaps with a threat actor tracked as UNC3886, a Chinese espionage group previously observed by Google. However, there are also significant differences which make attribution inconclusive.

Nvidia's latest graphics driver is causing chaos for some GeForce GPU owners in the form of a glitch that makes the screen flicker.
Wccftech spotted the bug with Nvidia's Game Ready Driver version 616.56, and as flagged by Renan Maniero on X, Team Green has said it's testing a fix for the issue (as revealed on the GeForce forums).
The screen is reportedly flickering white or black and exhibiting other brief flashes of color corruption, and this is happening in certain games (The Last of Us and Minecraft are mentioned, among others) or on the Windows desktop. It's also occurring in web browser sessions and while playing YouTube videos, based on Reddit reports — of which there are plenty.
There's no shortage of gamers losing their temper with Nvidia, too, and blasting Team Green for the quality of its graphics drivers. Many are venting with an observation that GeForce drivers just haven't been the same since the launch of the RTX 5000 series.
For example, this Redditor says: "It's been particularly bad since Blackwell [RTX 5000] release. Just on Blackwell alone, between the whole DisplayPort 2.1 not working with HDR, screen flickering, and black screens on the initial release, it's been a complete mess."
Another gamer complains: "It is pretty shocking seeing this from a trillionaire company on a stable build. Nothing about this driver is stable."
Yet another Redditor grumbles: "It's crazy how things are now. You used to be able to update each time or be one driver behind at worst. Now I'm half a year outdated and thinking I'll just leave it."
Analysis: more drivers, more problems? There are possible workarounds thoughEven older GeForce graphics cards are affected here (Image credit: Future)This seems like quite a widespread issue and one that affects modern Nvidia graphics cards all the way back to RTX 2000 models.
If you're getting frustrated by this bug — random screen flickering gets pretty old, pretty fast, if it's happening regularly — Maniero also shared an apparent potential workaround on X that you can try while waiting for the official fix.
Seemingly, this is a bug that mostly affects monitors in 8-bit mode, and if you switch to 10-bit color (assuming your display supports this), the problem may disappear. Maniero also suggests that you try turning on Windows Auto Color Management (ACM).
Other folks on Reddit have shared various possible remedies, including switching from DisplayPort to an HDMI connector instead, and disabling Multi-Plane Overlay (MPO) in Windows 11, as one Redditor suggested. Nvidia provides a Registry file for turning off MPO (and enabling it again), but as ever with anything in this area of Windows, proceed at your own risk. (Although this method should be much safer than trying to edit the Registry directly yourself).
Your other choice is simply to roll back driver 616.56 to an earlier version, and there's no shortage of gamers who've done exactly that and report that the problem vanishes.
Hopefully Nvidia's official flicker-begone patch will be coming soon enough in the form of a hotfix, because this is an unduly annoying gremlin in the GeForce works that needs to be sorted out promptly.

Fırat Mıhcı, a computational linguist and founder of HumanizeMy.ai, argues that AI can correct its own writing style until common detection signals disappear entirely.
The analysis claims that a second AI model can rewrite an original AI draft until identifying traits become far less visible to reviewers.
Once a human editor approves that rewritten draft, it gets published under a real name instead of being labelled as machine-generated.
A study of nearly 19,000 abstractsThe study behind this claim examined 18,989 abstracts spanning three separate academic fields, published across the years 2019 through 2026.
The analysis compares word frequency trends before and after the release of widely used AI writing tools in late 2022.
In computational linguistics, AI-associated word use rose from 1.9 to 14.0 instances per 10,000 words after late 2022, roughly a seven-times increase.
Neuroscience abstracts showed a similar pattern, climbing from 1.7 to 8.7 instances per 10,000 words, close to a five-times increase.
Mathematics abstracts barely changed, moving only from 0.9 to 1.3 instances, which researchers treated as a control group for comparison.
The study noted that overlapping confidence ranges in mathematics made the small increase statistically indistinguishable from no change at all over the full study period.
One tracked term, "delve," showed up in 2.75% of surveyed abstracts during 2024 before falling to just 0.12% within an incomplete 2026 data set.
A feedback loop that confuses detectorsMıhcı shared the findings as an open study meant to expose a blind spot in current AI detection methods used across many academic publishers today.
According to the study, this pattern creates a cycle in which AI wording gradually becomes accepted as ordinary human vocabulary.
Detection tools trained on older writing samples risk falsely flagging real authors whose natural vocabulary now resembles AI-generated text more closely than before.
AI tools trained on newer papers instead risk absorbing AI-influenced writing as a normal baseline, making future AI text harder to catch.
Words such as "intricate," "showcase," and "nuanced" were also tracked, alongside "underscore," a term commonly linked to AI-generated phrasing.
Editors and publishers reviewing these abstracts reportedly did not indicate that the wording carried any artificial origin before the manuscripts were accepted for publication.

The research does not claim every abstract containing these words was written by artificial intelligence rather than a human author.
It instead argues that AI-associated language has entered published writing in ways that make word-based detection increasingly unreliable over time.
Because the 2026 sample remains partial, the reported decline in words like "delve" may still shift once more data arrives.
If AI-shaped phrasing keeps entering the published record undetected, the very baseline used to define human writing may keep moving.
This pattern raises significant questions for any field relying on writing style alone to separate human output from machine output.

The U.S. Army has selected 5 companies to construct small nuclear power units across a handful of domestic installations.
This initiative, called Project Janus, aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while building toward energy independence at military sites.
Officials expect up to 20 microreactors could eventually operate across these bases, pending additional private investment from the participating firms.
Five contractors, five bases, and a $2 billion awardAntares Nuclear will build its unit at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, while BWXT Advanced Technologies will build its unit at Fort Campbell in Kentucky.
General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems will handle Fort Hood in Texas, and Radiant Industries has been paired with Fort Benning in Georgia.
Westinghouse Government Services rounds out the group, assigned to Fort Drum in New York under the same milestone-based contract.
Combined, these five firms will share up to $2.2 billion through fixed-price milestone payments tied to construction progress.
“We now know that our domestic electric grid is potentially at risk in a conflict. We also know that we will not necessarily be able to move fossil fuels easily wherever we need them to go,” said Jeff Waksman, the Army’s principal deputy assistant secretary for installations, energy and environment.
“Right now, all critical infrastructure that the Army has is backed up by some form of liquid fossil fuel, primarily diesel. So that makes nuclear energy just a natural game changer for the Army.”
Nine bases had originally been finalists before November's announcement narrowed the list down to five selected locations.
Fort Wainwright in Alaska, Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Tennessee, Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington, and Redstone Arsenal in Alabama were among those excluded from the final round.
Uranium supply remains a persistent obstacle for the timelineThe United States currently lacks any operational nuclear microreactors and enriches only a small share of the global uranium supply.
Efforts by the Energy Department and the National Nuclear Security Administration to expand high-assay low-enriched uranium production remain in early stages.
Waksman acknowledged the scale of the challenge while expressing confidence that supply issues would not derail the timeline.
“We expect sufficient prioritization to ensure that we have the uranium that we need for our fastest moving reactors…probably going to push beyond what our supplies are as a nation.”
He added that coordination across federal agencies would be essential to securing enough material for later phases of the program.
Project Janus draws on lessons from Project Pele, the Pentagon's mobile reactor initiative, and borrows its contracting structure from a NASA cargo program.
The Army's approach also follows a separate Air Force effort already underway at Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska.
Waksman indicated an announcement about coordination between the two service branches could arrive within the coming months.
Officials have emphasized choosing accessible domestic sites first, deliberately avoiding overseas or island locations for these early deployments.
Only once the technology proves reliable within the 50 states will military planners consider expanding microreactor construction beyond current borders.

Sonos, a name synonymous with effortless home audio, has had a somewhat spotty track record in recent years. The audio quality has been unfailingly excellent, but Sonos software efforts have been an enervating mix of doing too much and too little, leaving customers not just cold but actively frustrated. Its latest updates and innovations are quite different: The introduction of a unifying platform, Sonos 27, and the threads that can pull it all together in something unironically called Sonos Fabric.
I reached this conclusion on Tuesday as I sat in a darkened space and watched relatively new company CEO Tom Conrad dash from one demo living space setup to another, carrying a pair of Sonos Play speakers. He placed the pair of them on a credenza opposite the new Sonos Beam Ultra and then, without touching the Sonos app or even fiddling with the speakers, transformed the three audio sources into a unified surround sound system. And when he was done integrating the small speakers into the larger sound system, Conrad simply picked up the Sonos Play speakers and returned them to their original space. The speakers then reconnected to the standard Sonos Wi-fi network and resumed their regular roles.
This is Sonos 27 and Fabric at work, where Sonos products know when they're being lifted and moved and then can communicate ultrasonically with the Beam Ultra, which then makes a small mesh network connection to build a super-low-latency surround system.
It looked and sounded like magic and is exactly the kind of dream audio scenario I imagined when buying disparate speakers. Sonos, which has always allowed its speakers to communicate and create stereo sound systems, has long held the promise of this kind of automation, but it was never possible before Fabric.
It's a hardware and software feature that could excite existing customers and even inspire a legion of new ones.

Instead of trying to transform your Sonos speaker into a voice-activated hub for all your smart home needs, Sonos decided to keep the 27Voice fixated on Sonos capabilities, but with a bit of a twist that I think people will appreciate. In Conrad's demo, he asked a sort of rambling question about a musician, and 27Voice quickly connected him to his desired music. Time and again, Conrad's vague queries resulted in sonic pleasure.
Sonos' other strategic gem, though, is openness. So, if you want to ask your Sonos tougher questions, like how to properly cook tenderloin, it'll happily pass only the prompt to another AI of your choice.
This open approach also carries through in reverse, with AI models like Claude, ChatGPT and, yes, Siri, able — via something Sonos calls Sopnos MCP — to control Sonos speakers through the new Sonos platform.
Sonos is also fixing past missteps by, for instance, making sure that new products joining the mix are complete and fully integrated members of the Sonos family.

Those high-end headphones only connected to the Sonos Arc soundbar. The new Ace Ultra, which includes Sonos's Headphone Engine 2, uses Sonos Fabric and, with a press of a button, can pick up the audio from the Beam Ultra or any other member of the current Sonos audio family. I saw this in action, and it really is a one-button operation.
What has remained consistent in 25 years of operation is Sonos's audio quality (I have an aging pair of Play:1 speakers that I love and use to this day), and even in my brief time with the Beam Ultra soundbar and Ace Ultra headphones, I found impressive audio chops.
The Ace Ultra headphones, which promise 35 hours of battery life (3 hours on a 3-minute charge), feature a new driver and updated adaptive EQ that adjusts each time you put the headphones on. The headphones delivered a wide range of sonic experiences to my ears, which I selected from the new Sonos iPad app. I heard deep bass, sharp highs, and warm mids. I never wore the original Sonos Ace headset, but I can report that these are not only comfortable to wear, but the updated ear foams and greater yoke range and flexibility provide a near-perfect fit and seal.

There's also a button that you can push to quickly sync up with the Beam Ultra. Onboard ANC also managed to cut out the thrum of a very noisy demo space.
Similarly, the Sonos Beam Ultra is a relatively compact soundbar capable of producing some very rich sound. There are now 9 drivers, including a pair of upfiring ones dedicated to bouncing dialogue off the walls and ceiling. Sonos says it provides 7.1.2 surround sound, and in my experience, it was loud, clear, and exciting. During the demo, they were playing Godzilla vs Kong, and I immediately wanted to grab some popcorn and park myself in front of the 4K TV and white Beam Ultra soundbar.
Overall, the $699 / AU$1,099 speaker bar seems well equipped to transform any audio-challenged TV.

Sonos appears to be taking some care with the rollouts, with some arriving as soon as next week and others more slowly as previews and early access builds. I'm sure Sonos would love to avoid another calamity where everyone's Sonos app changes at once, and they suddenly lose features or even gain ones that confuse them. I'd argue, however, that these alterations — Sonos 27, Fabric, and 27Voice — are some of the most thoughtful updates Sonos has produced in a generation and could turn your disparate collection of Sony hardware into a cohesive, useful, and sonically pleasing whole.
When I previewed The Blood of Dawnwalker, its prologue was an impressive snapshot of what Rebel Wolves was hoping to achieve with its vampiric open-world role-playing game (RPG). It was a tight and tense introduction to a game that encourages you to spend your time wisely, live with the consequences of your actions, and balance Coen’s newly acquired Vrakhir abilities with the hope of maintaining his humanity.
Now, after sinking dozens more hours into the full release, this team that includes several ex-Witcher 3 developers hasn’t quite made that formative game’s spiritual successor. However, I can’t fault the ambition found in the studio’s debut release — even if not every idea is fully realised and a few elements lack polish.

Ever since playing through that exciting opening, which sees Coen’s village razed and his family held captive to be used as sacrifices in an upcoming coronation for the valley’s vampire overlord, Brencis, I've been desperate to get back in and see what awaited in the rest of the game.
So, it’s strange that when you first hit the open world, the game starts to feel a little aimless. Your main goal may be to kill Brencis and save your family, but the direct approach is almost certainly going to lead to your death. Instead, it’s smarter to take the time to destabilise Brencis’ reign by going after his generals and increasing your power for the upcoming showdown.
No rest for the wicked(Image credit: Bandai Namco / Rebel Wolves)Unfortunately, that means engaging with a lot of dull and fairly repetitive tasks dotted around the map, mostly clearing camps of soldiers and smashing up boxes of supplies. The set dressing changes a little depending on which vampire lieutenant you’re going after (it may be blood supplies for Ambrus or slivovitz distilleries with Bakir), but you’re ultimately going through the same motions.
And I was surprised at how little some of the vampire leaders actually feature in the story while you’re being such a thorn in their side. Most development happens off-screen, while notes are found on soldiers bemoaning Coen’s actions and edicts are issued as you become more notorious.
There isn’t as much time given to interacting with these villains before an inevitable confrontation. And that’s a shame, because when you do come face-to-face with these flamboyant, furious, and fascinating characters, they end up being killed off just as they’re starting to get interesting.

Given the developer’s history and pedigree, and what was shown off in the prologue, this is more of what I expected. You get to spend time with some entertaining and well-written characters, explore interesting environments and dungeons, tackle challenging combat encounters, and often emerge with some nice new loot.
Choices and consequences come front and center in many of these quests, and I felt the game gives a surprising amount of room, as your investigations can open up different approaches or outcomes. And quite cleverly, not all effects are felt immediately, with some outcomes or repercussions only felt much later down the line. It shows Rebel Wolves really thought about the interconnectivity of its world and wanted to show the impact you have on it. A huge plus for the RPG lovers who thrive on that level of world-building.
The final countdownTying it all together is the 30-day time limit that’s central to The Blood of Dawnwalker. Much has been said about this mechanic, but the countdown to Brencis’ coronation and your family’s execution wasn’t a constant threat looming overhead. I considered it a lot at the start, but eventually, instead of making me question whether every single action was worth doing or made worthwhile progress, losing chunks of time eventually became something I just accepted as the price of doing business.
(Image credit: Bandai Namco / Rebel Wolves)Where it was always a frustration, though, was during levelling up, where almost all skills and perks require you to spend time learning them, meaning you could lose half a day (or night) simply to make Coen stronger. I would understand this if it were reserved for learning more advanced skills, but when the same price must be paid to get 25 per cent more health or some passive stamina regeneration, it doesn’t feel worth the cost.
Best bit(Image credit: Bandai Namco / Rebel Wolves)Getting stuck into one of the game's more involved quests is when I feel The Blood of Dawnwalker really hits its stride. These are the moments I reflect on most fondly after my time with the game, mixing in dungeon crawling, exploration, and investigation — often alongside a well-written character or two — to create compelling and exciting scenarios. Even more so when they layer on tough moral choices at the conclusion, which sometimes come back to help (or hinder) you later.
The transition from day to night didn’t substantially change the game, either. Yes, it enables Coen’s vampiric powers, with neat tricks such as shadowstepping across chasms or walking up walls, but these don’t have the impact I feel they could have.
For starters, there’s so much blood available in consumables or animals to hunt out in the wild that I never felt this moral dilemma the game wants to push about Coen needing to feed. There is a neat idea that only happens if you’re low on health in vampire form and chatting with a non-player character (NPC), where you risk Coen giving in to the hunger and sucking the blood from his conversation partner, but it didn’t happen to me once in my playthrough.
Tonight I'm going to suck...your blood(Image credit: Bandai Namco / Rebel Wolves)When it comes to a clash of steel and fangs, the vampire powers don’t elevate what is a perfectly serviceable, if mostly underwhelming, combat system. The foundation is based on directional inputs to attack, block, or dodge, and picking the correct direction will set up your opponent for a devastating riposte from your sword or claws.
You can weave in a few abilities that range from the mundane, such as using pocket sand to temporarily blind an enemy, to several witchcraft or vampiric skills that burn your opponent's blood or set them up for a gruesome and bloody explosion. And while it all works fine, it never flows as smoothly as you would like or feels as impactful as you wish it did. Combat ultimately became something that I got through impassively rather than finding myself excited for the next encounter.
And that’s ultimately what makes me struggle to wholeheartedly recommend The Blood of Dawnwalker. Too many elements are dull, repetitive, or underused to keep me fully engaged over its lengthy playtime. There are captivating moments, though, that I feel some may be able to appreciate more if you’re able to overlook some of its flaws. Perhaps with some updates or a sequel, the ambitions of Rebel Wolves can be fully met.

You want an RPG to tide you over until The Witcher 3 Remastered
Given the development team’s history, there’s Witcher DNA throughout The Blood of Dawnwalker, and this will serve as a perfectly good stopgap until the third entry’s remaster.
You can’t look past some jank
Combat is not always the most elegant or smoothest experience, and there’s some awkwardness in Coen’s movement or traversal using vampiric powers that can frustrate.
You tire of repetitive tasks
A fair chunk of the game’s quests involve repeating an almost identical objective to disrupt the vampire leaders, and even though it’s not essential, it does get boring fast.
Time pressure gives you choice paralysis
I don’t actually think the game’s 30-day timer is as oppressive as it could be, but this could give some players some real choice anxiety.
The Blood of Dawnwalker has limited accessibility features. Subtitles are available in 14 languages, but you cannot customise the size, color, or position on the screen. Two control options are available, with the ability to invert both axes if required.
There are more choices when it comes to refining the difficulty of the game, though. As well as general preset options ranging from Story to Duelist, you can also specifically tweak enemy health, enemy aggressiveness, how easy it is to perform perfect blocks, and whether blocking is automatic if you want an easier combat experience.
How I reviewed The Blood of DawnwalkerI’ve put around 25 hours into The Blood of Dawnwalker over the past week and a half, and while I haven’t completed it yet, I feel I’ve seen more than enough of the game’s main story and side quests to offer a comprehensive verdict.
I spent all my time playing on a PlayStation 5 Pro on a Samsung S90C OLED TV and Samsung HW-Q930C soundbar while using a DualSense Wireless Controller.
I played on Balanced mode, which aims to run the game at 40 frames per second (fps) in dynamic 4K. A 30fps Quality mode is also available, but I preferred the option with a more stable fps that didn’t impact the visuals significantly. A Performance mode targeting 60fps will also be made available at launch.

Chris Malone, the executive who ran OpenAI's data center buildout, has left the company. The Wall Street Journal broke the story last week, and an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the departure to Bloomberg the same day.
Neither OpenAI nor Malone has given a reason for his departure or his next destination, and a message from Bloomberg to his LinkedIn account received no reply.
The top-level executive joined the company in March 2025, against the backdrop of OpenAI's Stargate announcement in January of the same year, a commitment to invest $500 billion in 10 gigawatts of US AI infrastructure over four years alongside SoftBank, Oracle and MGX.
A job cannibalized by changing priorities at the helm?With a total tenure of 17 months, a relatively short duration for the job, Malone arrived at a time when the job was incredibly demanding, as OpenAI fended off competition from rival Anthropic, a resurgent Google with its Gemini offerings, and what can perhaps be described as a love-hate relationship with Microsoft.
His exit may have been written on the wall weeks ago, according to the Wall Street Journal, which noted that Malone stopped reporting to OpenAI president Greg Brockman and began reporting to vice president Sachin Katti, who took over leadership of the group.
OpenAI has since appointed a chief technology officer to lead computing capacity, though it has not publicly named that person. Responsibility for what Malone did is now spread across at least three people: Uday Ruddarraju leads the data center team, Brent Mayo runs the build-and-delivery program, and Spas Lazarov, who came from the data center and energy industries, leads data center engineering.
All of this indicates it wasn't a sudden vacancy to fill, but one that had been on the cards for some time. This comes as reports indicate OpenAI is reviving data center initiatives involving leasing entire facilities, with others leading that effort. This would mark a significant shift from its initial plans to get involved in the building side of the business, which it seems to have focused less on lately, and a major strategic shift in how the organization plans to operate in the future.
OpenAI's own narrative points in the same direction, without conceding much, when it told TechCrunch it had "recently reorganized" its "infrastructure organization to support the scale and pace of our work," adding that it retains a strong and deeply experienced data center team with clear leadership. It, however, has not addressed Malone's exit directly.
The move is not isolated, as OpenAI continues to lose high-level executives; Business Insider tallied thirteen senior departures at OpenAI in 2026 as of August 21, and Malone is the fourteenth to leave the company to date. The Next Web counts seven senior departures or replacements since April alone.
Malone is also among the least senior names on those lists by title. The Head of data centers is not a named C-suite role, and after the reorganization, he reported to a vice president rather than sitting alongside a chief operating officer or a chief revenue officer for OpenAI.
Axios reported earlier this month that OpenAI's recent changes are "driven by strategy more than the revolving door" that characterizes the wider AI talent market, with OpenAI president Brockman deliberately building a leadership team to compete in the enterprise space. Brockman has denied this, telling the Journal that the spotlight on his company means "every departure gets scrutinized in a way that it doesn't otherwise."
The scrutiny comes with the ambitions OpenAI currently harbors, many of which seriously affect its direct partners, including Nvidia, AMD, and Microsoft. CNBC reports OpenAI is targeting roughly $600 billion in compute spending by 2030. It is planning a $30 billion data center in Georgia. Nvidia agreed on August 17 to provide up to $105 billion in financing for an OpenAI-leased campus in Ohio, after earlier reports said it was weighing a considerably larger guarantee.
The move comes at a time when the company is getting ready for an IPO that would inject fresh cash while also allowing employees to essentially cash in on their equity of what is one of the world's most valuable startups: OpenAI filed confidentially with the SEC in June, and chief financial officer Sarah Friar told staff last week the company will go public in 2027 or sooner, having originally targeted this year.
An exodus of key employees, including Malone, might just be a strategic change in how the company operates or otherwise, but given the sheer scale of the company involved and the potential consequences of such moves, the scrutiny is well-warranted in an industry that has otherwise progressed relatively unchecked in the name of progress over the past few years.

Last week, two major healthcare organizations suffered highly disruptive cyberattacks: Boston Scientific, and McKesson. We now have more details about both those attacks, and it seems at least one is the work of the infamous ShinyHunters extortion group.
McKesson confirmed having been struck by ShinyHunters, just a few days after the threat actor claimed responsibility. The group told The Register they broke into the company’s Snowflake and Salesforce instances and stole “millions of patients’ data”.
The company later issued a statement, saying the stolen data belonged to its Oncology & Multispecialty and Medical-Surgical business units. A spokesperson told The Register multiple employees were targeted with a vishing attack.
Boston Scientific works on restoring systemsThe group told the publication it stole more than 284 million records of patient data and demanded $55.2 million from the victims. They are saying the stolen batch includes patient tames, postal and email addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers (SSN), and details regarding their health condition. Whether the claims are true, and to what extent, remains to be seen after the investigation.
Boston Scientific, on the other hand, said it successfully removed the attackers from its infrastructure, but added that the investigation into the attack remains ongoing. It also said that new Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) devices, implanted after August 25, cannot be activated, and the data they generate will not automatically be transmitted to remote patient management systems.
“Newly implanted ICMs (insertable cardiac monitors) must be activated using the Boston Scientific Clinic Assistant app to enable the ICM to properly record episodes,” it explained. “New ICMs are unable to pair to the patient remote monitoring mobile phone, therefore available episode data recorded by the ICM will NOT be transmitted to the remote monitoring system until the ICM can be paired to the patient mobile app. Episodes will continue to be recorded by the ICM and can be transmitted to the remote monitoring system via an in-person interrogation with the Clinic Assistant app by selecting the “Interrogate” button.”
Boston Scientific is yet to name ShinyHunters as the perpetrators, and the group has not yet publicly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Supermicro has begun selling a workstation built around Nvidia's GB300 Grace Blackwell Ultra superchip, priced at $92,887.47 before tax and shipping costs.
That figure makes the machine roughly seven times costlier than a comparably specced Mac Studio running Apple's M5 Ultra chip, which retails at $12,299.00.
The total memory on the Supermicro workstation reaches 748GB, compared with just 256GB on Apple's Mac Studio with an M5 Ultra chip.
Built for heavy AI workloadsNvidia's platform instead splits its 748GB total between 496GB of system memory attached to the Grace CPU and 252GB of HBM3e memory sitting on the Blackwell Ultra GPU.
Despite that structural difference, the combined pool still gives buyers nearly three times the addressable memory found in the Apple alternative.
The workstation pairs a 72-core Grace processor with a Blackwell Ultra GPU, forming a coherent memory architecture Nvidia says supports trillion-parameter models locally.

The Pentagon has awarded X-Bow Systems almost $11 million to develop a lower-cost interceptor system under a missile defense program.
The project falls under the Missile Defense Agency's Rapid Response Small Launcher Technology program and seeks to create a weapon that could cost below $750,000 per launch.
That figure amounts to roughly one-fifth the cost of a Patriot missile, the current top-tier standard for air defense systems.
X-Bow develops a new interceptor approachThe Missile Defense Agency selected X-Bow through its Low-Cost Interceptor program, which focuses on developing affordable systems against advanced aerial threats.
The company will use the funding to continue propulsion work and prepare a prototype for a planned flight demonstration.
X-Bow produces its solid rocket motors and propellant internally, allowing the company to control more parts of its manufacturing process.
The agreement requires the firm to deliver a prototype system by late 2027, although that stage will not represent a fully operational weapon.
The Pentagon has faced pressure because existing interceptor systems remain expensive and difficult to produce quickly.
The war in Iran revealed a major setback as the U.S. is now left with about 250 THAAD rounds and less than 1,000 Patriot interceptors.
Patriot replacement rounds cost around $3.9 million each, while manufacturing takes years and depends on a small number of established suppliers.
“The contract will aim to address the critical need to expand the SRM industrial base, which is currently reliant on a duopoly of two primary manufacturers,” said the US Department of Defense in its contract announcement.
X-Bow said its production methods could help create affordable weapons while increasing manufacturing speed for military requirements.
“America can’t out-produce today’s threats with yesterday’s supplier base,” said Jason Hundley, founder and CEO of X-Bow Systems.
The company is examining ways to reduce costs across interceptor components, including propulsion systems and other expensive sections.
Other nations explore cheaper missile defense systemsThe search for lower-cost interceptors has expanded beyond the United States as allies face similar concerns.

“We’re taking a look at propulsion, we’re taking a look at all the expensive parts of an interceptor to look for opportunities to drive down every bit of cost,” said Lt. Gen. Heath Collins, director of the Missile Defense Agency.
The program shows the Pentagon is exploring alternatives as demand for missile defense grows worldwide.

The proposed system is intended for laboratories, factories, and workplaces where different instruments must work together without custom software links.
MHS uses software drivers that translate between computer systems and individual machines, allowing equipment with different interfaces to communicate consistently.
A common system for physical machinesIts drivers rely on basic commands for reading measurements or changing settings, giving agents a method for controlling connected equipment.
The system records machine details that might otherwise remain inside manuals or depend on knowledge held by experienced laboratory staff.
Users can enter such information through natural language, after which MHS creates reference material describing capabilities, adjustments and safety restrictions.
Agents can then discover compatible equipment across networks without requiring separate software bridges for every machine they need to operate.
The standard supports microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms and other equipment that offers some form of programmable interface for agents.

Physical limits remain a concernAnthropic said Claude interacts with experiments and hardware in an “exploratory manner, much as a scientist would,” during physical testing.

A group of developers reportedly lost their jobs during what their employer called an “AI Transformation.” Their response was unusually literal. They built OpenExecutive, an open-source system designed to perform work associated with a CEO and the rest of the executive suite.
The employer and CEO have not been named in the online discussion, and OpenExecutive’s own materials don't present it as revenge for a particular firing. That said, it's hard not to see some specific grievances in both the project and the response online, with lots of comments gleefully welcoming senior management to the automation discussion.
The appeal is easy to understand after several years of executives explaining that AI will make organizations leaner, usually while standing a comfortable distance from the part being trimmed.
OpenExecutive presents one AI executive to the user, but that voice is backed by eight specialist agents. The virtual management team includes equivalents of everything from a chief strategy officer and chief operating officer to general counsel and a board communications director. It can draw on company documents, remember previous decisions, and surface follow-up actions later.
Org chart forkedOpenExecutive uses Anthropic’s Claude models by default, with an executive agent routing requests to whichever specialists seem relevant. The developers pitch it as a C-suite group chat in which everyone responds promptly. The project is distributed under the permissive Apache 2.0 license. Anyone can inspect it, modify it, run it internally or build a commercial product around it.
That open-source element gives the project more weight than a chatbot sold as a digital chief executive might usually represent. It also allows workers to experiment with the same logic their employers have been applying to them. If a company can divide software development into tasks, feed those tasks to models, and keep a few people around for supervision, it can do so.
The comparison is not entirely frivolous. Executive work involves processing information, preparing scenarios, comparing trade-offs, and producing documents for other executives. Those are all activities developers think AI models can handle. It makes OpenExecutive both a product and a satire of AI products.
AI replacement has often been discussed as something that moves upward from the bottom of an organization, consuming routine work before eventually reaching management. The developers have turned the telescope around and discovered that a surprising amount of executive labor also looks like information moving between boxes.
Human accountabilityOpenExecutive is still an executive adviser, not a legal chief executive. It cannot accept responsibility or sign documents on behalf of a company. A human must decide whether to act on its recommendations and remain accountable if those recommendations fail.
That's where human leadership can't really be replaced. Analysis is part of the job, but it also involves making choices under uncertainty and accepting responsibility for the consequences. A model can recommend closing an office or cutting a team without feeling the weight of the people affected, while the humans deploying it may find the machine’s apparent neutrality rather convenient.
The project therefore reveals one of the stranger assumptions behind AI-driven layoffs. Companies often judge workers by how much of their output software can reproduce. Executives are more often judged on relationships and judgment.
AI does not erase that distinction, but it makes the special exemption harder to defend. If a developer must prove that their work contains something beyond the code an AI can generate, senior leaders should be expected to prove that their value exceeds AI recommendations. A large salary should buy more than the ability to schedule another meeting about efficiency.
Recent corporate experiments also suggest that replacing people can be easier to announce than to sustain. For instance, Duolingo’s CEO softened an “AI-first” memo after backlash over plans to phase out contractors where automation could handle their work.
Automation keeps happening, but there should be more questioning of its benefits. AI can help a small group start a company without immediately assembling a miniature court of consultants and executives. It can also give existing leaders a new justification for concentrating control while reducing the workforce beneath them.
OpenExecutive will not make CEOs obsolete, at least today. Its recommendations require scrutiny and auditing. But it shows the rhetoric of AI efficiency goes both ways in corporations. Once leaders decide that every job should be broken into tasks and measured against a machine, their own work becomes fair material for the same experiment. The resulting AI CEO may never fire its human counterpart, but it has already made the performance review considerably more awkward.
